Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Benetton

by Jim O'Connor, 2024-02-17

We're back! And what a game to return to provincial action, a top of the table clash with first versus second!

Now admittedly it's a first to be describing a Leinster home game against Benetton in that manner, as normally it's a game the marketing team struggle to sell. But it shows how far the Italian team has come. They've actually only lost once all season (away to Glasgow), compared to Leinster's two defeats but Leinster's greater haul of bonus points keeps them two points ahead in the table.

It's the commentator's nightmare once again!

Leicester.., sorry what was that, Leinster? v Leinster.., sorry what was that, Leicester?

Leinster are qualified after three games and Leicester could well lose tomorrow and still be qualified as well. In fact it would take a very odd result in the Sale v La Rochelle game to knock them out.

Leinster suffered only their second defeat of the season on New Year's day at home to Ulster.

Fair play to Ulster, they studied Leinster's blitz defence and exploited it smartly through a superb display of attacking kicking by Billy Burns. Leinster dominated possession and territory but Ulster showed some real character and physical grit to keep Leinster out. They also made the most of their chances while Leinster's decision-makers took one poor option after another.

Leinster take on Ulster in the new year's day game in what will be their last URC fixture for seven weeks. A win will maintain their spot on top of the table for the break.

The Munster game was another tough challenge due to the horrendous weather conditions. It wasn't a pretty game to watch but it was a very satisfying game to win. In conditions like that, rugby is really about two packs battering the hell out of each other and there was a terrible beauty to the game.

Leinster take on Munster for the second time in five weeks after mixed fortunes in Europe for both clubs in their previous games.

Leinster beat Sale at home but made harder work of it than expected. Sale reacted belligerently to being called a team of dirt-trackers and produced a spirited first half display against a misfiring Leinster side. But in the second half Leinster got their act together and pulled away to win comfortably enough. Sale got a couple of late tries when Leinster were down to thirteen men to put a bit of polish on the scoreline.
