Energia All Ireland Competitions Season 2020-21

Post by Ruckedtobits »

So the IRFU Rugby Committee have spoken and, once again, appear to have decided to ignore the views of the 20 Leinster Clubs who qualify for these competitions.

There are currently 5 Divisions of 10 Clubs and Leinster represent the biggest group and the Leinster Clubs strongly supported a structure with the greatest possible number of All Ireland League games and certainly a minimum of 14 games per Division. The IRFU. has opted for a 9-game League with the inevitable inequity that every League Division will be determined with some teams playing five home games and four away whilst an equal number will have the opposite split of fixtures.

Given the intensity of competition in most Divisions, this is an obvious bias and will no doubt cause dissention regarding how these fixtures are determined.

The good news is that the Provincial League results will now qualify Clubs for a Bateman Cup, Plate or Bowl knock-out competitout which will be welcomed by the vast majority of Clubs.

No great evidence that the AIL has any great priority in Lansdowne Road and the PR around these decisions was in the hands of the media before Clubs knew decisions had been made

Was there not for years AIL structure with uneven home/away games. Not ideal but everyone plays everyone. It's for one season
Aren't fixtures pretty much set/made online so no bias comes into it.
The all Ireland plate and bowl are only for this season so the league format most likely is also only for this season.

The cancellation of both AIL and Womens Interpro competitions is a major blow to Club rugby around the country and suggests that IRFU Committee have limited interest of the impact on Clubs over the past 10 months.

The Union should have announced the postponement and revision of the AIL format to commence on April 1st with a straight knock-out format over 8 weeks. Clubs need some rugby or plans for rugby to give them encouragement. This decision takes away the motivation to try to keeep Clubs active.

To be fair if you are able to play anything this season just play the provincial leagues that had played some games back in October
The cancellation of the AIL makes sense.
Straight knock out format wouldnt have made sense.
Clubs do need some rugby but look at localised 7s/10s or something different for this season/summer
