England v Ireland 2020 6N 23-FEB Father vs Son

Post by blockhead »

So this is not the ticket thread.
Mako V out due to family reasons, so thats both Vinupolas out.

Thornely predicting same 23 as last game but Doris in Deegan out. Doris to bench.
But he may not in the know no more.
You know I'm going to lose,
And gambling's for fools,
But that's the way I like it baby, I don't want to live FOREVER!

Just caught the news about Mako. He is not as good as billy but it is a big loss for england. hope EJ continues to play Curry out of position. he is not great at 8.

Lots of hype about doris in the press. he is quality but he is still relatively young. hope the pressure of delivering if he gets a shot on sunday doesn't fray his nerves. if anything, POM and Stander are playing out of their skins recently, knowing the doris and others are ready to step up.

Mako & Billy out, a returning Manu who may not start and a wounded England coming off the back of two fairly poor performances.

Big opportunity for us to take a scalp at the weekend and really kick start the Farrell era.

Would still worry about our carrying in the back. Can't see the back row changing but would have Kilcoyne in for Healy.

Sorry to hear Mako likely wont be playing, always great to see him on the field. I'd be inclined to agree with wixford tho and start Kilcoyne. Will be interesting to see if Farrell will stick with his starting six nations 8 in Doris, or go for O'Mahony in the cauldron. I reckon if we can stop Genge and Tuilagi they are beatable.

The Cat Stevens derby.

Mako hasn't been in great form since his injury but it takes away his handling threat. Jamie George might step up a bit in that regard, he's pretty good at it.

I wonder what gems Eddie will come out with this week. loved the "brutal" one before the french game and "we will show them what test rugby is all about". priceless.
bookies don't fancy us, but, I have a funny feeling we might snatch this. all the pressure is on england after the france/scotland games.

Gems from Eddie?
What about the gems from the Welsh camp trying to influence the ref in our game.
Furlong was illegal against us ref, keep an eye on him at Twickenham.
The Welsh are bad losers anyway but this is a new angle on it.

The42 are certainly in the business of hype for our encounter on Sunday:
https://www.the42.ie/ireland-england-tw ... 4-Feb2020/

Can't say I'm total in tune with their prognosis as experience from every level of the game suggests that when you learn how to disturb an opposition team in a fundamental way, its a massive advantage when you face them again.

The main reasons for concern have lessened, with the absence of the Vunipolas, but still those fundamentals niggle away:

A. England's power in the collisions;
B. England's cohesion in the maul;
C. England's defensive 'sheparding' of chasers under high kicks; and,
D. Jonny May's broken-field running power.

We can certainly avoid the impact and effect of some of these factors, but not all. I think that we can win on Sunday in Twickenham but I suspect that our best chance of doing so depends on us playing a game they do not expect. Despite the reputation of Farrell & Ford in mid-field and Itoje and Kruis in the middle of their pack, i don't think this is an English team which reacts well to surprises and I believe that Farrell Snr and Catt will look to distract them with some tactical surprises in the first quarter to get us into the game.

If we're within 6 points after 20 minutes, I believe we have the players to beat them. But, beware the 'Twickenham Effect' in the first quarter which has hit many fancied teams, who couldn't recover from a slow start..

Eng v Ire in Twickenham in 6 Nations -
England lead 6-4 on the head to head.
Overall its 11-9 to us.
I wonder in how many of those 20 games were England favourites?

ah. you mean this gem?
Wales forwards coach Jonathan Humphreys was also frustrated with what he perceived to be inconsistency from Poite in Dublin.
"There comes that inconsistency for us. It's clearly obvious that [Ireland prop] Tadhg Furlong has hammered across the scrum," the former Wales hooker said.
"It's created instability from left to right but we've got to deal with that.
"We dealt with it for most of the game but the one scrum we had to deal with that, we didn't and that's our fault.
"It's a massive learning curve. There are no excuses for us."

The officials for sunday are:
Referee: Jaco Peyper (South Africa)
Assistant 1: Romain Poite (France)
Assistant 2: Alexandre Ruiz (France)
With Marius Jonker (South Africa) on the rogger mellie.

It still bothers me that Peyper is reffing this game. He’s bad to the point of being a hazard to players. His crooked feed call at the RWC said it all with regard to how fair he is.

So Wales having accused Ireland of cheating against them are now saying that France are going to cheat against them next weekend.

Bono visited the Ireland camp earlier this week.

Humphreys was clear that there were no excuses and that Wales should have dealt with it. There isn't a game in international rugby where something isn't contentious - the scrum, the breakdown, release in the tackle etc. Teams have to deal with that and if they don't they'll come out on the wrong side of the result, I think that's what Humphreys was saying.

eddie jones is unusually quiet this week...no taunts. learnt his lesson from the french game? or is he nervous about what he is going to do without the vinupola brothers and a semi-fit Tuilagi?
