So. Leinster are the only team currently guaranteed a top seeding.

Sarries or Exeter will be next week and some French team in mid summer when their comp finally finishes.

All of the teams are known however. With Ospreys, Bath and Sale guaranteed bottom seeds.

Heineken Cup Final 2020

Post by MylesNaGapoleen »

Looks like we know now who will be in the pots (and possible tier 1s) for the pool draw in lausanne june 19th.

Not sure how they work out the tier 1 teams...but here's my best guess. Clermont over Glasgow for tier 1 as challenge cup winners this season.

Pro 14
Leinster (tier 1)
Glasgow
Munster
Ulster
Connacht
Treviso
Ospreys.

French Top 14
Toulouse (probably tier 1 - play off final happens soon)
Clermont(probably tier 1),
Lyon,
Racing,
La Rochelle
Montpellier.

English Premiserhip
Saracens (tier 1)
Exeter (tier 1)
Gloucester
Northampton
Harlequins
Bath

Interesting.
Looks likely that clermont will finish top14 no 2. wouldn't they get the bump over glasgow because of the challenge cup win? or is it purely based on domestic finish?

Looking at those pots, Sale would be a tough one to get in Pot 4. Will have a serious side next year.

What's the bets we'll finally get an Italian team when Benetton are actually good!

Purely domestic. Challenge Cup is the “Plan B” route, Sale got in that way as the other sides in SF made it via their league.

Benetton are also guaranteed Tier 4 status, they had fewer points than Connacht in the regular season.

Leinster - Tier 1
Glasgow - Tier 1/2
Munster - Tier 2
Ulster - Tier 2/3
Connacht - Tier 3
Benetton - Tier 4
Ospreys - Tier 4

English teams

Exeter - Tier 1/2
Saracens - Tier 1/2
Gloucester - Tier 2
Northampton - Tier 2/3
Harlequins - Tier 3
Bath - Tier 4
Sale - Tier 4

Won't know how the French qualifiers are sorted until after their play-offs start.

Leinster can't be drawn against another Pro14 team from Tier 2 or 3, so it'll be one English and French team from Tiers 2 and 3 and then we can draw any of the teams from Tier 4.

Which of the second seeds ends up in Tier 2 is drawn on the day of the draw.

They did but Sarries would have taken a 7th English team in anyway had Sale joined Quins in the top 6.

Long way to go yet but in theory we could end up with Saracens, Clermont and Toulouse.

On the other hand we could get Lyon, Quins and Benneton (although given their recent results against us I'm not sure we want to play them).

What are the odds of Munster, Sale and Montpellier ending up together for the ultimate South African love in.

We can't get that top group. Toulouse and Clermont can't be any lower than Tier 3 as they're both already in the Top14 semi-finals (Toulouse will be second tier at worst) and we have to draw one English and one French team from Tier 2 and 3.

We could get two English or two French teams in our group but at least one of those teams must be from Tier 4 and the only French team that will be in Tier 4 is the 6th ranked team (i.e. one who will lose next weekend in the Barrage round).

Would be best for us if Glasgow ended up in tier 2. Cause we would then avoid Sarries, Exeter and the French 1 and 2 (prob Clermont and Toulouse)

Would also mean Ulster being in Tier 2 along with Glasgow and Munster so the only teams we could draw from that tier would be Gloucester or the French third seeds.

I probably don't need to put this chart up any more as I think most people now have the general gist of how the seeding process works, but because I've always done it I'm going to post it anyway!!!
