Tough break for Belvo etc., hopefully somebody lets Spicer know that his reason for going to school is now over.

I know but most often there isnt near 8 teams in it. There should easily be room in season for more than a game in the cup even taking into account league, the vinnie murray and other qualifiers through the tiers.

Caniffe very impressive in his absence, constant source of gainline ball, big athlete.
Whole front row, O'Reilly and De Klerk standouts for Michaels, spent a lot of the first half defending their line but kept coming up with big plays.
Spicer and O'Neill impressed, Belvo probably didn't offer enough in the loose, will have been disappointed to not score one of the first half opportunities

Same happened last year to a very talented StM team that came up short V ‘Rock in first round. I agree though , that for some reason a lot of the ‘Elite’ teams dont get to play in the League competition before Christmas. Not sure if that was a instigated originally by Leinster, or the schools themselves.

Its the schools themselves. Think the cup should if at all possible be adapted and final played later. saying it cant is a cop out as 2nds/3rds/4ths competitions all go on and have as many 6th years across those teams.
the players themselves deserve more than 1 game of the competition theyve spent 7/8 months preparing for

Many dont compete in it. there is quite often far less than 8 teams competing in plate.

That was like a full test match for 18 year olds. The impact of the hits was 100% for men of that age/size for the full 70 mins and the level of rugby played in terms of errors was minimal. Very high standard of must win but ugly rugby. What I would say is that I am disappointed by the style of rugby that was played. It was similar to a Sarries or South Africa team pummelling the opposition until they tired.

Belvo and Michaels couldn’t find space out wide so tight were the defences so they resorted back to route 1 for most of the game. I was very impressed with the reading and communication of the wide defence. Wingers stayed out on their men and never bit in.

Spicer for Belvo is the obvious pick for pro honours next season but I thought De Klerk was the pick from Michaels. Some hit and hope kicks but won several jackals and made fantastic cross field try saving cover tackles. His reading of the game is top class and he shrugs his shoulders and saunters around the pitch unphased.

Anyone got a link to a video of the match?

The defences bent but never burst. Michaels very flexible soaking up a lot of pressure early on. The concentration levels were laser sharp. Holding the line for the opening 50 was really the winning of the game for Michaels. If Belvo went into half time with the wind in their sails and up 12/14/21 points it would have been hard to come back.

There's a difference between still playing rugby and still playing senior Cup rugby.

At a time when there's wider political pressure away from private schools entirely, it's not plausible that they would do something like that. Only a tiny minority of schools Cup players have even a brief professional career.

The debate about knock-out v league format has been going on for decades, at least since the '60s. Tony Ward has written more than most on it but Bren Fanning has also contributed.

Players later in their careers at the high end of the game often attribute their ability to "execute at the death" to the experiences at and since School's Cup successes / failures.

The emotional pressures are huge but extending it through two or three months might impact on other aspects of development during vital years of school.

We have a system that is working. I don't want to break it but that doesn't mean it can't be improved.

One thing I think should be off limits is the education of players. The provinces are blocked from playing kids in school. There's a system that doesn't really pay young players bit does allow them to continue their education and tries to run the pro path in parallel with a 3rd level education (although I understand that that path is not for everyone).

Built into the current rules is a hard end to the season on a significant date in the rugby calendar. In American Football, college players sometimes drop out after their season finishes to prep for the draft. But that wouldn't be tolerated here.
