Leinster Senior Club Competitions 2019-20

Post by Ruckedtobits »

Not yet the end of September and yet Terenure have picked up the first Leinster Club trophy of 2019-20.

Terenure have started with a bang and their wins started against Lansdowne in the Senior Cup semi-final in mid August. (The Final will be played on 17th December). They followed up with League wins against Clontarf 51-10, UCD 18-24, and St Marys 26-50 last Saturday in Templeville. Opponents Old Wesley came through their Section against Lansdowne, Trinity and Naas in a close fought series of games which culminated in Trinity beating Naas last Tuesday to allow Old Wesley get through on points difference.

Terenure won the Final well by 0-24 without ever overcoming an Old Wesley team who couldn't quite convert their entertaining attacking style into points on the scoreboard.

The win was an early success for the Terenure Squad led by captain Paddy Thornton and coached by new man Sean Skehan, recently joined from Glenstal College and Garryowen FC. They were much the better team in putting points on their opponents and with a fast close-supporting style they will be good challengers in Division 1A of the Energia All Ireland League which starts next weekend.

So, who'd have thought it in this era but St Marys RFC have four members of the Ireland v Russia World Cup Squad.

God be with the days when the Club took the Russians on alone in the early '70s when St Marys College RFC headed to Moscow led by such great stalwarts as JB (Sweeney), Gull (Byrne) and Tojo (also Byrne) They also had very useful players such as Paul Andreucetti, (his brother Alberto was in the front-row), Liam Grissing, Terry Young, Eddie Wigglesworth and Denis & Tony Hickey etc. They could also have had internationals like Sean Lynch and John Moloney.

They travelled with heavily filled cases of meat cuts Tojo, Pint bottles of Guinness from Sean Lynch and Levi Jeans (to barter for anything they forgotten) supplied by JB and The Rat (Terry Kennedy).

Oh, the good old days when Brexit have not been heard of and The Common Market was down near the Coombe and one Irish club could score four tries against Russia in the first 25 minutes.

Jonny Sexton, Rhys Ruddock, Sean Cronin & Jordan Larmour all bear the brand as they go out to do battle with Putin's latest regiment of Cossacks in Kobe on Thursday. But even if they win, they'll never have as much crack as JB and his troops did in the 1970s.
