The U19's are playing Connacht in North Kildare tomorrow, Friday, at 6pm. I think they're a bit beat up after Northampton last week so it'll be a much changed line-up I believe.

edit: oh.. and the U20's are playing Italian Academy in Ashbourne on Sat at 2.30
Dont Panic!

68-5 win to Leinster [33-5 at halftime].

Extremely impressive performance from the Leinster outfit. Skill levels very high in terms of passing, offloading through contact, ball placement after the tackle, holding running depth in support and finishing with scores. On a warm day and a hard pitch, they were in their element. A number of the tries were pretty fine to watch.

Top of the class was Terenure fullback Billy Dardis, who has it all in attack: out-and-out pace, a serious step off either foot, good decision-making and physicality. He's an outstanding prospect, having made the Ireland U18s team that reached the FIRA final last April. Every time he got the ball, there was danger ... and Leinster got the ball to him pretty often. Clongowes* centre Fergal Cleary bagged two early tries before coming off with a knock to the head. He's quite a heavy, low-slung build and finished his tries very well.

Harrison Brewer didn't quite have the impact I thought he'd have – he wasn't running over people for fun. That's not such a bad thing, in some respects – he played his position well, straightening the line, offloading out of the tackle, passing well and making good decisions. Leinster also used him quite a lot as a decoy, and it was clear that he was a marked man – he shipped some big hits from the RBAI centre partnership he was up against, but his basics with regards to body position and ball placement are first rate. You can see there's a good rugby brain ticking in there, rather than just a guy who's physically dominant. Like Dardis, he played on the Ireland U18s team last year.

The loosehead prop Oisin Heffernan is a big, strong unit who handled well in the first half when the game was more competitive. There's already a lot of physical ability and natural size there in terms of being a possible Leinster Academy target in a couple of years' time. Backrow were impressive, both individually and as a unit. Some exceptional aerial work from St Michael's No6 Josh Murphy, who is a good, rangy flanker in the Bonnaire mould – makes good decisions, carries the ball well and works hard at every phase of the game.

Tim Schmidt came off the bench and was a big upgrade [in my opinion] on starting scrum-half and captain Nick McCarthy – his pass off either hand is really, really sharp, and he scored a superb try off the back of a lineout some 50m out from the Ulster line. Good awareness of space and a lot of pace.

When you're looking at a 68-5 win, you're looking at a team performing very well, and a lot of individuals playing to a high standard. Outhalf Ross Byrne kicked 9 out of 10 conversions, for example, and Castleknock winger McCormack showcased some blistering pace. If the weather stays like this, the ball stays dry and the ground stays hard, it'd be difficult to see either Munster or Connacht beating this Leinster outfit.

Leinster Schools 2012-13 - Stars from another galaxy

Post by Ruckedtobits »

ON Wednesday 19th September, Leinster Schools will play again at home in Donnybrook against Connacht Schools. For those with any enthusiasm for the future of Leinster and irish rugby, this is a date to set a reminder in your phone.

In Donnybrook this afternoon the latest galaxy from the Leinster development room displayed their skills in a superb game against Ulster. Don't be deceived by the scoreline, which ended as a magnificant 68-5 win to Leinster, 10 tries to one, this was a great competitive game of rugby - everywhere except on the scoreboard. The Leinster team contained an assortment of talented backs and forwards, a number of whom will definitely progress to higher honours and maybe right up to senior international green jerseys. But a number of the Ulster boys also exhibited the highest skills and ability and will undoubtedly progress to professional rugby careers.

Foe Leinster there were five tries in the first half, without any dominance in the forwards. There were five more in the second half when both teams had emptied the bench of almost all their substitutes.

The Leinster players who caught the eye of this observer were more in number than those who didn't! But nit would be implossible to give any account of this game without mentioning the excitement generated by the skills of Billy Dardis (Terenure College) at full-back. James McCormack (Castleknock's left-winger) and Fergal Cleary (Clongowes Wood - center) each contributed two tries with real pace and footwork whilst Harrison Brewer(Terenure College) set-up much that was good in the Leinster back-play. Out-half Ross Byrne (St Michael's) contributed 9 converts, although never the major threat to the Ulster defence. Up front, Oisin Heffernan the Roscrea loose-head prop demonstrated the sort of strength and rugby skills last seen at this level when Cian Healy played for Belvedere. The entire Leinster back-row of Patrick Thornton (Terenure No 7), Josh Murphy (St Michael's No 6) and Nick Timoney (Blackrock No 8) showed skills of the higest standards - both in attack and defence. It will be no surprise to see Murphy and Timoney graduate to higher levels in the coming years as both have the natural physiques for the professional game. Thornton however, although a slight as Keith Gleeson when he first arrived into Leinster rugby, demonstrated many of the traits of that great No 7 with top class tackling and great support play.

Not all the stars started the game and the performance off the bench by Tim Schmidt (Terenure College and son of the esteemed Joe), as sub scrum-half, was astonishing as he displayed immaculate passing and then a stunning breakaway try from the back of a line-out - 45 metres from his opponents line. He was joined in the honours list by sub second-row James Ryan (St Michael's) who excelled in tight and loose and did not look the slighest bit over-awed by his big opponents. Michael Courtney (CBC Monkstown) replaced centre Cleary in the first-half and also showed great skills in contributing two scoring passes in the second half.

Despite the margin of defeat this was no mediocre Ulster team. They had excellent players throughout the team and Methody loose-head Michael Lagan, Down HS second-row Tom Donnan and captain Daryly Morton, playing at No 8 and representing Royal School Armagh, all showing high-class talent and great individual ability. Rory Campbell (RBAI) on the left wing saved a couple of certain scores early on and full-back Jack Owens (Campbell) were others to demonstrate good skills and a competitive edge right to the final whistle. However scrum-half Josh Fullerton was perhaps the most impressive player in the Ulster back-line and a name which we shall see more of in the coming years.

With such players setting the standards and the Schools Interpros being played at such a benign time of the Season, the future of one source of future Irish players looks in great hands. Clearly much credit must go to the coaches and strength and conditioning staff for the preparation of these players for a game of this quality, at this time of the year. In addition, both coaching staffs deserve the highest praise for the manner in which the game was played. This game could have been shown on TV without any fear about the quality of the fare on offer.

UNDER-18 INTERPROVINCIAL Leinster 68 Ulster 5

Post by tones »

Impressive result - how are the Ulster team rated though?

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/spo ... 54507.html

UNDER-18 INTERPROVINCIAL Leinster 68 Ulster 5: THIS WAS nothing short of a mesmerising introduction to the Leinster Under-18 Schools, led by the dazzling feet of fullback Billy Dardis, as they swept to a 10-try victory over a decidedly poor Ulster at Donnybrook yesterday.

Centre Fergal Cleary, number eight Nick Timoney and Dardis shared the spoils with two tries each in what was a supreme collective effort highlighted by a very-Leinster style of play based on quick transfer of the ball and the exploitation of space.

Ulster looked like making a game of it when left wing Rory Campbell sizzled into the corner in the ninth minute to cancel out Cleary’s opener. They were soon made to pay when Cleary completed his double, quickly followed by a pair from Dardis, who was like greased lightning and elusive with it.

The tries simply flowed for Timoney (2), flanker Josh Murphy, lock Rory Moloney, wing James McCormack and replacement scrumhalf Tim Schmidt, the son of Leinster coach Joe.

LEINSTER : B Dardis (Terenure); C Brennan (Cistercian Roscrea), F Cleary (Clongowes Wood), H Brewer (Terenure), J McCormack (Castleknock); R Byrne (St Michael’s), N McCarthy (St Michael’s, capt); O Heffernan (Cistercian Roscrea), G Reynolds (King’s Hospital), O Jager (Blackrock), D O’Connor (Blackrock), R Moloney (Cistercian Roscrea), J Murphy (St Michael’s), P Thornton (Terenure), N Timoney (Blackrock). Replacements : M Courtney (CBC Monkstown) for Cleary 33 mins; A Roche (Terenure) for Reynolds both half-time; J Ryan (St Michael’s) for O’Connor 42 mins; T Schmidt (Terenure) for McCarthy 46 mins; A Penney (St Michael’s) for Moloney 55 mins; A Marks (Gonzaga) for McCormack 61 mins; H O’Donnell (Newbridge) for Jager, E O’Sullivan (Templeogue) for Heffernan, both 62 mins.

ULSTER : J Owens (Campbell); R Benade (Methodist), J McClure, R Bell; R Campbell (all RBAI); C Shiels (Coleraine AI), J Fullerton (Campbell); M Lagan (Methodist), M Montgomery (Bangor), A Gilkinson (Wallace), L Benson (Belfast HS), T Donnan (Down HS), D Dass (BRA), A McGrath (RBAI), D Morton (Royal Armagh, capt). Replacements : C McKee (Methodist) for Benade 19 mins; C Kernohan (Ballymena) for McGrath half-time; A Shaw (Bangor) for Montgomery, A Thompson (Methodist) for Dass, both 41 mins; C McIlmurray (Campbell) for Gilkinson 47 mins; J Gallagher (Methodist) for Benson 52 mins

Saw this team beat Bayonne espoirs (the french club champions at that age) in Bayonne a couple of weeks ago, it was great to see that the lad's who replaced the starting 15 were just as good. Nice side well coached.

Interesting to see that Harrison Brewer seems to be settling more and more into the number 12 jersey. Spoke to a few guys who were coaching Terenure a while back and they seemed to think he might move into the back-row (number 8 in particular). It's more than a year since I last saw him play, but if half of the reports are to be believed, he has the potential to make it in the professional ranks.

Keep an eye out for James Ryan who came on as a 2nd row for the u18's. Making that team when you've just started 4th year is very impressive indeed.

That looks like a very strong pack for the 20s, although I'd prefer to have seen Leavy at 7. We have too many 6's and he's such a good prospect at 7. He should be left there.
