Not too many cut-price flights to NZ from Ireland. That must put a very big dent in their "rugby budget" in Ailesbury Road. Wonder what was the total cost of that junket and how do they square it off with school attendance in the middle of term in Leaving Cert year (for a fair number of Squad).

Tournament is in Thailand FYI

I'm sure any player who travelled family paid towards the cost.

Turns out they're streaming the whole thing, Michael's game is here:
https://youtu.be/E2OENAkTmxA?t=11105

While I don't want to be a killjoy, I too wonder how they square this with school attendance requirements. Can they apply to the dept of ed for a special dispensation? Or promise to make up the lost schooldays at another point? Curious minds need to know...

The whole thing is nuts. Played in over 30 degrees heat. The expense.

7 schools sides (3 English and 1 each from NZ, SA, Wales & Ireland) plus an invitational team - whatever that is.

This is year 3. There were 20 teams in year 1 with 10 from that year's host venue - SA.

Each team is guaranteed 3 tough games but it is a mad thing to do for Michael's just to tune up for the SCT. All the games are recorded so Belvedere can study them in detail if they wish.

Qui bono? The organisers I guess.

Any significant injuries to high profile players ahead of the senior cup starting?

Felt like last year there were quite a few representative players who suffered injured before the cup even started (Colbert, McErlean etc.)

The 2023 Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Senior Cup will start on Sunday when fierce rivals St Michael’s and Belvedere come together at Energia Park.

A number of games will be streamed live which you can view here.

The other plum tie comes in the shape of Terenure versus Clongowes Wood next Wednesday.

Already, CUS and St Andrew’s have qualified from the Vinnie Murray Cup to take their chance against Roscrea and Gonzaga, respectively.

St Michael’s College v Belvedere College, Energia Park, Sunday KO 3.00.
St Michael’s travelled to the World Schools Festival in Thailand in December, playing in 35-degree heat over six days, winning one and losing two in three close encounters.

They push for a balanced rugby approach, mixing the kick, run and pass options at all times, even though using their maul and carrying from 5-metre penalties has been a profitable strategy.

They were able to get the better of Blackrock in the Noel Turley Memorial Trophy at Belfield in November, always a good thing.

Lock Mikey O’Reilly, centre Wilhelm de Klerk, a South African from Johannesburg, and centre/wing Jules Fenelon are all Ireland U19 standard.

It is at the Leinster U18s Schools level that the bulk of their players have excelled, backs Andy Cosgrave, brother to Leinster’s Chris, James Sherwin and Paddy Wood showing promise.

Captain Jim White could be joined in the back row by Sam Corrigan and Billy O’Donoghue in behind front rowers in Leinster tight-head Riain Coogan and Ireland Schools hooker Tom Stewart.

Belvedere has a dozen players back from last year’s squad to provide much-needed experience in dealing with the top tie of the first round.

There is enough representative experience in the presence of Leinster U19s tight-head anchorman Kaer Brennan.

It will come as no surprise, in light of the personnel, to hear that Belvo’s pack of forwards is the largest in the competition.

Leinster U18s in loose-head Eoin McDermott, giant second-row Alan Spicer and number-eight Alex Usanov ensure a physical edge.

Out-half Louis Gaughan is a capable game manager and Andre Ryan is a top-notch competitor in the midfield.

Blackrock College v Presentation College Bray, Energia Park, Monday KO 3.00.
Blackrock come into this campaign with victories over the likes of Terenure, RBAI, CBC Cork and Methodist, balanced out by defeats to Gonzaga, Newbridge, St Michaels and Clongowes.

Certainly, the Williamstown school has all the ingredients needed to go back-to-back, led by captain Oliver Coffey.

In fact, there are half-a-dozen starters back from the final, namely backs Coffey, Luke Kritzinger, Andrew Quinn and Eoghan Walsh and locks Conor Tonge and Tom Briggs.

Out-half Conor O’Shaughnessy, prop Tom O’Riordan, hooker Mikey Yarr, utility forward Jack Angulo and wing Maxim Aschenbrenner made the bench on that special day.

In addition, Leinster Schools captain Alex Mullan and Michael Colreavy are influential members of a fine pack of forwards.

Pres Bray should be a completely different prospect this time around, all their starters are retained from last year’s squad.

It is the most experienced side that Pres’ has ever fielded with three representative players in the first fifteen.

Energetic hooker Finn Brien and Ireland U19s second-row Billy Corrigan lead the pack.

The forwards’ priority is to generate decent ball for an electric backline, marshalled by Ireland Schools out-half Jack Murphy.

There are plenty of options for the cerebral playmaker with fellow international Finn Treacy a focal point of the attack.

Treacy represented the Leinster and Ireland Schools on the wing, but does his best work in the centre for Pres with the speedy Dylan Henry lurking on the wing.

Newbridge College v Kilkenny College, Energia Park, Tuesday KO 3.00.
Newbridge brings a group of players blended between players that made the final that never was in 2020 and those who won the 2021 final.

Half-backs Tadhg Brophy and Paddy Taylor have an eye for an opening and centre Ciaran Mangan and full-back Todd Lawlor have the exquisite footwork to take advantage.

Prop Billy Bohan, hooker Mark Masterson and flanker Ronan McGroary have played their part in the Leinster Schools.

The Kildare school topped its group in the League and followed that up with wins against CBC Monkstown and Cistercian College, Roscrea in the quarter and semi-finals, respectively.

They were not able to match Gonzaga in the final in what could serve as a reality check for a super-talented squad.

Kilkenny has had a very solid season, going well in the League before coming up short against Gonzaga in the semi-final.

There is an even spread of experience as four backs and four forwards return from last year’s squad.

Ireland U19 contenders in out-half Sean Naughton and tight-head prop Adam Watchorn are cornerstones for how they wish to exploit the opposition.

Captain Stephen Smyth is transitioning from the back row to hooker in a pack where loose-head Toyin Smith and flanker Paddy Bramley sets a physical tone.

The back division is capable of turning possession into points with Ivor Fenton a fulcrum in the centre.

Terenure College v Clonglowes Wood College, Energia Park, Wednesday (February 1) KO 3.00.
Terenure have shown enough form over the course of the season to mark them out as dark horses.

Led by captain and lock Matthew Somerville, ‘Nure is a youthful side this year with prop Adam Cooper and loose forward Ben Blaney making the quick transition from Junior Cup to Senior Cup this year.

‘Nure will hope they can take advantage of a very fast and dynamic backline to help them through this cup campaign with the likes of centre Daniel Martin and wingers Paddy Curry and James McCormack showing great from in this season.

In the pack, senior players Ben Nolan and Carlos Mantero-Belard will look to impose their physicality on the game.
Terenure will also be looking to their Austrian out-half Caspar Gabriel Lorin to help things along in attack alongside the very capable Elliot Mallen at scrum-half.

Clonglowes Wood Director of Rugby Tomas O’Leary, the former Munster and Ireland half-back, will lean on head coach Matthew Wright and his assistants Johnny O’Donoghue and John English to steer the ship.

The Clane school is looking for a tenth Senior Cup, the last one coming when the pandemic forced a share of the laurels with Newbridge in 2020.

The key front five area is a source of strength with Munster U19 loose-head Max Duggan and Ireland U18 loose-head James Wyse at the coalface.

Leinster U19s extended squad members Alex Kelly and James Ruddy, last year’s locks, are back for another crack.

In behind, there is no lack of guile. Ireland half-back Tom Murtagh is a clever playmaker close to the action and centre Harry Roche-Nagle brings an edge to the three-quarters.

St Mary’s College v Wesley College, Energia Park, Thursday (February 2), KO 3.00.
There have been encouraging signs of a serious revival at St Mary’s this season with a talented squad that has enjoyed some eye-opening wins.

Andrew Sparrow takes responsibility for the armband as the kind of imposing player others are only too glad to follow.

Last year’s Ireland Schools tight-head was joined in the Leinster U19s squad by lock Luke Policky.

There is a quality quartet of Leinster U18 squad members in vice-captain Evan Moynihan, David Leane, Zach Hopkins and Aaron O’Brien.

The pack of forwards is big enough and smart enough to go toe-to-toe with a typically skilled backline, headed by Moynihan.

Wesley College is again looking to punch above its weight with a young team eager to impress.

A mixed league campaign produced wins against CBC Monkstown and CUS, leading to a quarter-final loss away to Kilkenny, consolation coming from the group achieving one of their main goals in qualifying for the Leinster Schools Senior Cup.

Returning number eight Oran Handley, who leads by example on and off the pitch, is supported by prop Shane Pedlow and lock Chris Collins in the forward pack.

Hooker Rian Handley, younger brother of captain Oran, and flanker Aaron Bennett-Murphy epitomise the never say die attitude of the team.

Out-half Charlie Hempenstall, a Leinster U18 representative last year, will aim to move the team around the pitch and showcase his talent.

Wes’ doesn’t lack quality further out where centre Johnny Cazzini and full-back Finn Nolan always have an eye for a gap.

CBC Monkstown v St Vincent’s Castleknock College, Energia Park (February 3), KO 3.00.
Castleknock Director of Rugby Adrian Flavin has overseen steady progress in recent years for a school that last won the Senior Cup in 1965.

They have split the captaincy between goal-kicking number eight Danny Ruane and centre Peter McEntegart.

Second-row Wali Khwaji returns to take on the responsibility of calling the lineout with Conor Boyle adding to the ballast in the back row.

There is maturity at half-back where both Sam Wisniewski and Ross O’Connor should be able to guide the game plan.

Centre McEntaggart and tight-head prop John Cadogan are important anchors in defence and at the set-piece, respectively.

The translation of CBC Monkstown’s motto ‘Certa Bonum Certamen’ means fight the good fight.

Driven by a core group of 6th years, the squad is led by their captain Tom Chadwick, a true leader, and vice-captain in scrum-half Eoghan O’Hanlon.

Having caught the eye of the Leinster Talent Identification coaches, Charlie Meagher continues to lead the charge for provincial recognition and honours at U18s.

CBC has gained success in winning the Vinnie Murray Cup on four occasions, most recently in 2019.
With the introduction of a new rugby structure at the school, the boys have been building understanding. Steadily improving performances have led to qualification for this year’s Schools Cup.

Gonzaga College v St Andrew’s College, Clontarf RFC, Friday (February 3), KO 3.00.
Gonzaga has enjoyed a very successful season to date, winning most of their friendlies and beating Newbridge College in a high-scoring final to win the Leinster Schools’ Senior League in December.

The Ranelagh school is captained by the physically dominant Paul Wilson, the number eight joining Ireland Schools full-back Hugo McLaughlin in the Leinster U19s triumph in this year’s interprovincial championship.

Leinster Schools squad member Luke McLaughlin, at hooker, and the ever-present second-row pairing of Jamie Kennedy and Tom Wyley make ‘Zaga formidable up front.

Other key players are the half-back pairing, Oisin Murray and Stephen McMahon, who has a very high place-kicking percentage this season.

The skilful, combative midfield pair of Jody Browne and Aidan O’Flanagan is hugely important.

St Andrew’s should be brimming with confidence from an impressive passage through the Vinnie Murray Cup, taking care of St Gerard’ (22-12), St Columba’s (42-0) and Temple Carrig (20-13) in the semi-final.

Of course, this is a different level of competition. But, they have real quality in centre Joe Ballance and captain Josh Perrem at blindside.

Fellow loose forwards Rocco Hill and Adam Tobin have the same nose for the ball as Perrem and a willingness to carry the fight.

In fact, it was their watertight defence that kept them a step ahead of Temple in the semi-final, hooker Patrick McIlduff and prop Jack Bourke showing up well.

They will need all of that cohesion and spirit as well as Ballance and Francis Manzocchi’s clever use of the ball for able finishers Harry MacChesney and Jak Dolly.

Cistercian College Roscrea v Catholic University School, Lakeland’s Park, Friday (February 3), KO 2.30.
Cistercian Roscrea is in the first year of the stewardship of Kolo Kiripati and Alan Long.

The Offaly school have enough Interprovincial players back from a galling first-round loss to Wesley last year to drive them.

Mixed form in the league gave way to an impressive 8-0 win away at Castleknock in the quarter-final and a battling 22-12 loss to Newbridge in the semi-finals.

The squad is captained by the talented Richie Whelan and the loose forward was joined by Connacht U19 captain Max Flynn at training with the Ireland U19s.

In the pack, Rory Og Doody, Rory Glynn have interpro’ experience, while Lee Fitzpatrick and Billy Hayes have made the step up from the JCT side last year.

Scrum-half Sean Finlay started for the Leinster Schools, while Jack Deegan, James Conroy and Charlie O’Sullivan are backs who can change a game.

Catholic University School have been impressive in manhandling The High School (41-8) The King’s Hospital (53-0) and St Fintan’s High School (46-17) in qualifying for the Vinnie Murray Cup final.

By extension, it also gives the Leeson Street school a shot at the Senior Cup where they will be battle-hardened.

Head coach Marc Adam will look to his captain Lucas Maguire, a Leinster Schools Interpro, and his younger brother Ruben on the openside.

Number eight Dylan McNeice has been impressive in a pack of forwards that has plenty of aggression.

The same goes for the back division in which full-back Jack Grant makes timely incursions in attack and centres Sean Byrne and Rian Treacy play with an edge.
