Ireland Top Try Scorers

Post by CollapsedMaul »

Would anyone know where to (or if it’s possible) to get an all time list of Ireland Test Try Scorers. Top ten-ish available on Irish Rugby or Wikipedia but it’d be interesting to see the top 50+

Any ideas?

Hate to diss a good body of work, but at first glance, Keith Earls has 35 tries, not 15

Also, this (Rory Underwood - 8 tries) not to be confused with the Rory Underwood who scored 49 tries for England?

I just thought it might be interesting to see what Chat GBT (or whatever it's called) might say!

They're all famous for confidently spitting out incorrect answers though apparently.

1. Brian O'Driscoll - 46
2. Keith Earls - 35
3. Tommy Bowe - 30
4. Denis Hickie - 29
5. Shane Horgan - 21
6. Girvan Dempsey - 19
7. Jacob Stockdale - 19
8. Geordan Murphy - 18
9. Brendan Mullin - 17
10. Andrew Trimble -17

11. Rob Kearney - 16
12. Ronan O'Gara - 16
13. Jonny Sexton - 15
14. Conor Murray - 15
15. Keith Wood - 15
16. Kevin Maggs - 15
17. Andrew Conway - 15
18. G.V. Stephenson* - 14
19. Jamie Heaslip - 13
20. Garry Ringrose - 13

21. C.J. Stander - 12
22. Keith Crossan - 12
23. Rory Best - 12
24. David Wallace - 12
25. Simon Geoghegan - 11
26. Cian Healy - 11
27. Josh van der Flier - 10
28. Fergus McFadden - 10
29. Hugo MacNeill - 10
30. C.M.H. Gibson - 9

31. Trevor Ringland - 9
32. Bundee Aki - 9
33. Robbie Henshaw - 9
34. Simon Zebo - 9
35. Simon Easterby - 8
36. Malcolm O'Kelly - 8
37. Jack Conan - 8
38. Hugo Keenan - 8
39. James Lowe - 8
40. Paul O'Connell - 8

41. Gordon D'Arcy - 7
42. Jack Kyle - 7
43. Jordan Larmour - 7

That's a run at it. Once you get below 7 tries there are a whole heap of players on 6, and you are into the realm of not renowned try-scorers. I have probably missed a few here.

David Humphreys - 6 tries
Conor O'Shea - 6 tries
Rob Henderson - 6 tries
Iain Henderson - 6 tries
Ronan Kelleher - 6 tries
Craig Gilroy - 6 tries
Michael Kiernan - 6 tries
Peter Stringer - 6 tries
Sean O'Brien - 6 tries
Tadhg Beirne - 6 tries
Brian Robinson - 6 tries
Alan Quinlan - 6 tries
Tom Grace - 6 tries
Eric Miller - 6 tries
Tyrone Howe - 6 tries
Sean Cronin - 6 tries

* G.V. Stephenson [test career 1920-30] held numerous national and international records:
- his 89 test points were the highest total in world rugby for 22 years
- his 40 test caps were the highest total in world rugby for 27 years
- his Irish points scoring record lasted for 38 years until beaten by Tom Kiernan
- his Irish try scoring record lasted for 61 years until beaten by Brendan Mullin

Great research and fascinating notes. Of particular interest is the absence of the player considered Ireland's greatest winger for at least 50 years AJF O'Reilly, who played for Ireland for 15 years.

Tony O'Reilly was a prolific try scorer during two Lions Tours (SA in 1955 - 16 tries, NZ in 1959 - 22 tries) but never showed the same ability for Ireland despite the presence of a number of other great backs - e.g. Kyle, Henderson, Flynn, Brophy, Gibson, Kiernan, Hewitt, McGann, Mulligan.

O'Reilly is recorded as scoring 4 tries for Ireland.

Another one I need to check is Noel Henderson (1949-1959) who played centre and full-back for Ireland and the Lions and was also a place-kicker. He scored 54 points for Ireland.

Some surprising numbers in there. I'm amazed Tom Grace only has 6 and that Crossan has 3 more than Ringland. Great seeing Girve at no.6
