BREXIT 2021

Post by Oldschool »

BREXIT.
Whither Scotland and NI.
There's is a very strong possibility that Scotland will establish independence and join the EU as a full member in the next five years.
This would leave NI isolated.
So what are the options for NI.
Stay as they are with all that entails and it's a long list.
Become part of a united Ireland.
Become part of a federal united Ireland.
Become part of a federal Scotland.

Realistically, in the long run, a federal united Ireland is the most likely outcome.
For the politicians what's not to like.
An extra layer of government and a larger gravy boat.
But who is going to fly that particular political kite.

The EU27 have already indicated they would support, financially, a step-by-step reunification process for NI and ROI - without that support, reunification would collapse the Island economy in the short term. That said....the question of reunification is now "when" rather than "if" - even with right leaning political parties in europe.

If you look at election results in Norn Iron since 2016...EU, local and national.....you even have unionists effectively voting to leave the UK to stay in the EU. The pro-brexit DUP lost their seat in the EU at the last european election in 2019 to the pro-eu Alliance party. In the national elections last december, the DUP, who ran a pro-brexit campaign, lost 2 seats in Belfast, so it is not a flash-in-the-pan. The old green v orange argument is being replaced with plain old common sense and economic sensibilities.

Interesting times.

the EU are setting up an office in NI to oversee the transition after jan 1st. Let's see what happens but I believe the Smugglers Association of All Ireland are delighted with how things are going.

This should become an interesting thread in 2021, as will the Brexit 2022 thread when it starts.

Now, here is what Mr Frost has got for us from those nasty people in Europe:

We have taken back control of our laws and our destiny. We have taken back control of every jot and tittle of our regulation in a way that is complete and unfettered. ......Britain will now be able to catch and eat prodigious amounts of extra fish.

Signed: Boris - Prime Minister

And yes there are lots of other bits too, about 1,000 pages, but nobody's interested in that just now!
