If the mortality rate is 3.5% then 70k will die.
Dig a little deeper into the figures.
Who are at risk and who may die?
80% are more or less unaffected by the virus.
The remaining 20% ie 400k are the ones at risk.
This means that the real(meaningful) mortality rate is 17.5% for those in the 400k group.
Looking at the earlier posts relating to age and health conditions.
If you are 60 years of age or over (MOI) then you are in the high to very high risk group.
What should people in the at risk group be doing to protect themselves and just importantly what practical advice should we/they be getting.
Your mission should you choose to accept it is to address that last question.
BTW I'm hoping someone will dispute my numbers and demonstrate that I've totally misunderstood.
Won't dispute your numbers but rather point to the fact that we have 2nd lowest average age in Euro zone and lowest % of over 80s. (Italy has highest over 80s). Suggest numbers should be recalibrated to reflect population distribution against WHO mortality rate in each age sector

If we accept those numbers that we are accepting that this pandemic will result in over 50 million global deaths. We have 30-ish cases in Ireland. Are we really going there already.

The HSE are due to issue their own prediction later this week.
They'll almost certainly factor in the age profile as pointed out by RTB so the numbers will look better however...
The real problem or difficulty is to identify what action can be taken to isolate the 20% from the 80% who aren't.
On top of that, for how long will the isolation have to last?
An even bigger problem might be getting the population on board.
The carrot or hope has to be that if the problem could be kicked down the road for long enough then a cure might be found.

John Travolta hospitalized over the weekend with suspected case of CV19.
Was subsequently released when they realised it was a case of Saturday Night fever.

 God. That was awful.

Serie A and indeed all sports in Italy suspended until April 3rd (at least). Think there is going to be a few enforced 0-0s in the Pro14. I'd imagine the 2 italian teams won't be doing any travelling either.
Munster were due play Benetton on 21st and 27th of March.

You missed out on a fairly handy ‘Stayin Alive’ reference there. Take your points when they’re offer

Jim Corr gone full tinfoil hat on COVID19. Claiming 5G and Bill Gates were to blame for the spread of the virus.

Denmark have just announced a massive shutdown of schools, colleges, childcare, public offices, pubs, nightclubs and advising most workplaces to do likewise

Anyone concerned at the lack of real information coming from the HSE etc.
A few examples.
The East of Ireland is a bloody big % of the population.
At the very least the county should be named and for Dublin, D4 or wherever would be useful.
Secondly there's a "Myths" debunking piece on RTE
One of the golden rules is don't repeat a myth, just keep putting the message out there.
Have any of our cases made a full recovery?
Cork is the genii in the bottle for Ireland, our source of the first community case and early enough too.
The pneumonia case arriving at the doors of a private hospital doesn't fill one with confidence, there are a lot of unanswered question in the public domain at least.
Just a random ramble of questions but the biggest question
Are the authorities doing enough to get the response/buy in that they need from the public.
Older people, yes because they are the ones most at risk but what about the 80%?

"It is expected that the announcement will involve the closure of schools and colleges and other public facilities and include an appeal to businesses to facilitate remote working where possible. Restrictions on public transport are also likely, it is believed. It is expected that the announcement will amount to a general shutdown."

You reckon he might be able to get rid of this just like he did with the snakes?

Looks like it really is going to be a sh!t month for all of us, best of luck everyone. I think drowning out the outside noise will help us all get through it, I struggled to keep pace with the news on twitter this morning. I thought the last couple of days were hectic but they were nothing compared to what happened today and can really make things seem overwhelming.
