Fiscal Treaty Referendum
Voting yes will create Jobs?.........
Voting no will be a protest vote against water charges?...........
Voting yes will impress the market?.........
Voting no will save jobs?.........
I wish the debate would actually focus on facts, whilst I haven't read it or may not full understand it yet, the media direction on this from government and the media itself has been abysmal.
I hope to get around to reading this in full:
Link to the Treaty text
I am voting yes- For me, we are fiscally shafted already and i would prefer to continue the ongoing austerity in an orderly fashion with the "security" of the ESF to extend loans or re-mortgage the country.
Listening to the breakfast show (NT) yesterday, Shane Coleman was interviewing the head of the TEEU. He asked the union rep
"Surely you don't want to go back to a time where the government is telling Aer Lingus to hire staff, in an effort to boost their employment figures?"....
TEEU moustache: "Would that be such a bad thing?"
I nearly broke my radio. I think all of the unions trying to make a protest vote out of this are being a little bit too self interested!

I'd entertain all opinions that stand to reason, I'm just not hearing many strong reasons..... barring your one!TerenureJim wrote:Sinn Féin says vote No I think they've just made my mind up for a Yes.

If Sinn Féin were anti homosexuality, would you shag Brian Kennedy?

Bit risky if the 1st offer is "all or nothing".jezzer wrote:Never take the first offer on the table.

Mary Lou may be many things but at least she's a woman. I'm a bit worried about you there simply, that you would even hesitate for a second.simplythebest wrote:What if the choice was Brian Kennedy or Mary Lou?johng wrote:Sounds a bit like that tosser who paid his household charge cause Boyd Barrett said not to.TerenureJim wrote:Sinn Féin says vote No I think they've just made my mind up for a Yes.

The online lads & lassies in The Journal have put together a document where they have translated the EU 'lingo' on the treaty into laymans language, it's a much simpler way to understand it.

Re: Fiscal Treaty Referendum
Voting yes because when the dust settles on the current financial crisis our politicians will have control over our budget. The treaty stipulates a small budget deficit, without it our political masters have the temptation (to which they will succumb!) to run up large deficits in pre-election years to bribe the electorate. So, to be blunt, I don't trust our politicians to behave responsibly.
And.....if the Shinners are against the treaty then I'm for it.

Re: Fiscal Treaty Referendum
So... you think we ran up a big deficit and that's what happened? You don't have access to a something like say Google by any chance do you? You might want to spark that up and have a look at the actual numbers. It might be enlightening for you. Good places to look are the OECD, ESRI, CSO, and Eurostat. IMF have a good stats section too.Exile wrote:Voting yes because when the dust settles on the current financial crisis our politicians will have control over our budget. The government bought the electorate here alright, the problem wasn't the deficit though - we were the poster boys of Europe (along with Spain) for not running up deficits. We had this thing called a property bubble. It's quite different. This fiscal treaty does nothing to solve that and instead sets up a rigid regime to fix a problem that didn't exist. There has still been no attempt to deal with capital flow trumping all other considerations (thank you Peter Sutherland) or allowing banks to fail. In other words this fiscal treaty will fix none of the problems (apart from Greece's) and will be a noose tightening around our neck as the depression deepens. It's utterly suicidal. I sometimes despair at our German overlords and their ultimately self-defeating cynicism.
