By establishing that he could have gone but has chosen not to be divisive, he's helped lay the ground for a future run and built up some goodwill.

He couldn't help himself when one of his "inner" circle pointed out the Churchill precedent.

It's the last week of October, the temperature is 18C; the wind is blowing every windmill in the country at max revolutions; solar panels almost everywhere are producing power for the National Grid; the price of gas is lower than before the Russians invaded.

Isn't nature a powerful force and wonderful?

I've never qouted the Pope on here before, but here you go...... regarding online porn.
"It is a vice that so many people have. So many laymen, so many laywomen, and also priests and nuns.
That's right, even nuns watch porn.
Well holy god!

"I hear you're a porn watcher now Father"!
You know I'm going to lose,
And gambling's for fools,
But that's the way I like it baby, I don't want to live FOREVER!

Great win for Seamus Power, in the top three for last 54 holes and collects a Winner's Prize of $1.17m for his troubles and top five in Fed Ex rankings. Following on from Rory's win puts Irish golf at the top of the pile.

CNN & Bloomberg both suggesting that the US Mid-term elections COULD produce the smallest swing against an incumbent Administration in the past 30 years.

The Democrats will probably lose control of the House, but not by much and it could be effectively a 'hung' House with little agreed legislation, without 'pork barrel' deals.

The Senate is too close to call but might not have a Republican majority, despite the predicted Trump surge.

The US electorate is vast and it is clearly divided. We won't know for some weeks precisely how these results will finalise and it will be months into the future before we know how these elections will impact on the political landscape. Certainly Trump's future path back to the White House is no way clear-cut.

I think the biggest thing seems to be the most looney Trumpistas lost badly and even the likes of Fox are coming down hard on him and that type of messaging. It would be no harm if that element was seen as a vote loser before the next election cycle
I like your right leg. A lovely leg for the role.

The radio documentary about sexual violence at Blackrock college is hard listening:
https://overcast.fm/+jWnvohbPU

My recollection is that the sexual crimes of the clergy first started to come to the courts and be covered in the papers in the early '90s. And for thirty years it hasn't stopped, rather one institution after another (and not just the religious) has been revealed as having harboured (and in some cases facilitated) such viciousness. Protected by the thin veil of an apparently deliberate ignorance, why was Irish society complicit with this barbarism? And has the reason for it been properly addressed, or are we happy to treat this failure as belonging to a past we treat as a foreign country?

Well… am I happy that this systematic torture was covered up by the Church? No

Am I happy that they still sit on huge swathes of wealth? No

Am I happy that they still feel free to read a letter from the bishop that comments on the morality of society after proving beyond any doubt that they are a bunch of lying pricks who aided and abetted child rapists and abusers? No

Am I happy that their ethos is still upheld in the majority of schools in the country? No

Am I happy that i have no practical choice but to send my children to a catholic school? No

Am I happy that I went to one of the Holy Ghost schools and probably know lads who were raped by these absolute b$&%@#ds? No

Am I happy that when I was in that school that the priests walking the halls very likely knew what was going on but still said nothing? No

Am I happy that priest would proclaim from the pulpit that “the church is not the clergy, everyone here is the church” which was their cynical way of hiding behind us in society? No

Am I happy that my mother had to enter the chapel by the side door after giving birth until she was “cleansed of her sin” by being churched? No

Am I happy that the congregation sold our school playing pitches most likely to pay for the legal defence of the child rapists in their ranks? No

Am I happy that we had to have money to out in the church collection every week, even if we didn’t have any ducking money? No

I could write this list all day and come up with more and more reasons that I am not happy with the past and how society allowed them to be immune from prosecution. I could continue for days about how their stranglehold on our society held us back and held us down as a nation but I can finish this with

Am I happy that it looks like this horrible disgusting religion is dying and no longer is in a position to hold us down and hold us back? Yes

Read Derek Scally's book The Best Catholics in the World.

It won't change the past but it might influence the future.

Took them long enough, SLS came in late and over budget, and will probably be priced out of the market once SpaceX get Starship going.

There is actually. They provided all sorts of services that our imperial oppressors refused and our fledgling state couldn't afford. Healthcare and education are the cornerstones of a society and the churches provided both. Ireland would not be the nation it is without them.

bollix, the Catholic Church is a scourge upon our society. and held us back from even before the days of Arch Bishop John McQuaid right up to when we finally began to throw off their shackles.

our State's refusal to take proper responsibility for educating it's population and raising generations for export dies not make the church a good thing. At most some good was done, but the cost was much more immense that you may think.

Generations of married couples forced to live together because to the Church's ban on divorce
Generations of Mothers refused autonomy over their own bodies because the Church's ban on contraception
Generations of children tortured and raped
Lord knows how many women forced to go to another jurisdiction to get what is in most developed countries a standard medical procedure
Generations of families going hungry so they could pay their Christmas and Easter dues so they would not be shamed from the pulpit
who knows how may child rapists hidden within their ranks and moved from parish to parish to very on unsuspecting families

That's just in Ireland

just think for one second how much damage they did in Africa with their ban on contraception at the start of the HIV epidemic, it's actually horrifying.

I have no time for them, and the only reason I would ever want to believe is so they could rot in hell for all of the pain and suffering they have caused

Hatred, nah. Absolute disgust and contempt for them.

as for the accusation of bigotry:
noun: bigotry; plural noun: bigotries
obstinate or unreasonable attachment to a belief, opinion, or faction; in particular, prejudice against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group.

there is nothing in my opinion about the Catholic Church that is unreasonable. I don't particularly care what mumbo jumbo people believe that's entirely up to them once it does't impinge upon mine or others rights
