Rugby world grieves over death of young star

TRIBUTES poured in from the rugby fraternity yesterday following the untimely death of Conrad O'Sullivan.

The 25-year-old Munster inter-provincial, who was also a key member of Cork Constitution's squad AIB League and Cup squad, was found dead at his home yesterday morning.

His colleagues were in a state of shock and Cork Con suspended rugby activities for next weekend.

Devastated Con coach Brian Walsh said: "We were to play St Mary's in the AIB League this weekend, but that has been postponed.

"We're still trying to get our heads around the sad news. Conrad was the heartbeat of all the good things we did on and off the pitch this season.

"It's just so hard to take in; everyone in the club, from top to bottom, just feel so sad a young guy like that has been taken from us."

Mr O'Sullivan was a member of the 1998 Cork minor hurling squad until rugby commitments forced him to quit.

He turned to rugby on entering Presentation Brothers College, following in the footsteps of his father, uncles and cousins (including current international Mick O'Driscoll).

He went on to play with University College Cork, and was a member of the Munster Development panel. He also played a number of times for Munster in the Celtic League.

Mr O'Sullivan continued his impressive playing career with Constitution.

PBC headmaster Michael Hennessy described the sudden death as "a tragic loss", while rugby coaching director Damien Philpott, who trained him at under-age level, said it was "a massive shock to everyone".

"Conrad was a top quality player, who could move through any back division and play in a number of positions comfortably.

"He had a great personality and worked very well with the young kids in the school," he said.

He is survived by his father Con, mother Eileen, brother Harry and sisters Margaret and Aileen.
