Connacht Rugby are delighted to confirm Andrew Smith will join the Professional team from the Ireland Sevens squad ahead of next season.

Smith joined the Sevens programme in 2021, having come through the Leinster Academy. In his 69 matches with the team, Smith has scored 21 tries and was part of the squad that competed at the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town.

In XVs rugby, the back three player featured for Emerging Ireland, starting against the Pumas in Bloemfontein in October 2022, and won an Energia All-Ireland League medal with Clontarf last season.

Makes more sense of the Smith signing, they have enough outside backs, especially with Chay Mullins ready to make the step to senior rugby.

I had heard that he was at Connacht on a 1 year with the option of a second year. Obviously Connacht didn't pick him up. Makes sense, the poor guy can't stay fit. Hopefully in the U.S. with less physicality he does OK.

Such a shame.
I was at a Munster A v Leinster A game years ago in Limerick and Byrne was the stand out performer for Leinster that day.
He looked like he had a great career ahead of him.

What a signing for Connacht.
This is a signing with a real statement of intent.

Connacht have a strong squad, have a pack capable of getting parity against most, and a fairly strong backline.

Imo they are not far from becoming a regular in the knockout stages of the URC, and from there they should keep building.

Jennings just made one of the best try "assists" imaginable. Tackles and strips the big no.8 about 15m from Connacht line and bogs it down to Edinburgh 22 where a couple of defenders make a hames of dealing with the ball. Jennings sprints up and turns it over leading to a Connacht try. Incredible stuff

Genuinely confused by that last Edinburgh try. Ball wasn't out of the ruck nor did it look to be on the try line. So how is Kinghorn's entry from the side legal?

Blade's third try was a kick through which he followed up on.

But it was an odd one... When he dropped the ball to kick through, he let it hit the ground and then kicked it. Am surprised none of the Edinburgh team claimed a knock on. It wasn't like a drop kick... It bounced off the ground before he kicked it

Was it legal? If so it was quite clever as it seemed to cause the defence to double take. A bit like the stutter run up for a penalty in football

The ball had touched the try line when the scrum half moved it back. Hard to tell if it had touched before he started his run... But it was on the line
