It’s a great idea really.
It allows the player to develop in the academy, affords them the time to learn, grow, continue studies etc. whilst also keeping away the distractions of other potential suitors.

Edogbo can now just concentrate on his development rather than worrying if he will have a career or not, which must be a great peace of mind.

Was anyone ever poached from the Munster academy?

That's why they can force players to finish the academy before moving onto a senior contract. Leinster lost Illo to a senior contact in Connacht at the intake stage for the academy.

You make a great point.
The only player I can think of is Dillan, and he was sub academy but offered a full academy spot by Connacht.

Munster have done a great job of retaining players.

This contract that they've given to Edogbo has previously been given to Coombes I think and from what I recall came about after Leinster sounded Casey (who also got one) out about a move up to Dublin.

I’m sure we’ve tried it on more than one occasion.

Ultimately I’m happy with each province having first dibs with up n coming players. I’ve no objection with a province offering a player academy spot if their own province fails to offer….similar to the Conor Oliver situation. I’d imagine that’s easy to police.
There is no harm in other provinces giving guys a chance.
There is only so many places available and you want yere to be some chance that late developers are picked up.

Ultimately it’s about having as many Irish qualified payers playing pro ball within our system. Cheaper that foreign imports etc
Academy players are normally students living with mammy so keeping them local is ideal but we shouldn’t rule out a player if it didn’t work for him at first province. Look at beirne Ross cronin dillane etc etc etc

Or nobody wanted them?

I’d be surprised if you thought that were true.

RO'G just looking for attention again. As far as I can see, he's a follower of the Eddie Jones notion, that an important part of the coaches role is to produce controversy about themselves, in order to reduce the pressure on their players. The media, particularly those pundits with at best a rudimentary understanding of the game of rugby, can't get enough of such rubbish.

Getting caught breaking a touchline ban doesn't take pressure off his players, it's just pointless cheating from someone who thinks rules are for other people.

I have great memories of him as a player and he's clearly a good coach, but I don't ever want to see taking an IRFU paycheck again.

ROG's behavior is not unusual for a coach in the Top14, we just hear about it from ROG, because he's ROG.

Well he looks like Enoch Burke of rugby coaching to me.

Whilst ROG is a former Munster player, he is no longer affiliated with the club.

Probably best to start a new thread to cover him?

Yeah me too.
Do the other Top 14 coaches really get into as much disciplinary trouble? If so that's a bit mad.
Dont Panic!
