US Major League Rugby 20/21

Post by Oldschool »

Just noticed that neil_m is post match schedules for these games.
Any insights or points of interest.
For example, Rory Best is coaching with one of the teams, are their any other Irish connections.
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall who's the greatest player of them all? It is Drico your majesty.

A new MLR attendance record was set last night, with over 11k in attendance for the San Diego legion v Utah match. A very significant milestone hit, in a new professional league.

Toronto Arrows have folded. It's pretty much the death of Canada as a rugby playing nation, I can't see where they go from here.

The NY franchise is on the verge of folding now too.

Are there any MLR teams not hemorrhaging money?

Are there any professional clubs in world rugby not hemorrhaging money? It seems to be me that either you are backed by a union or sugar daddy or else you fold.

I feel like a decent chunk of TopXV are modestly profitable. Exeter, Northampton and Leicester had decent chunks of time being profitable.

In contrast calling what optimism MLR was formed under a wing and a prayer would be an existential insult to avians and theists alike.

It's a good sign that new owners are still looking to invest in the league. I really want this league to work.

Another team is entering this year the Miami Sharks so it looks like it's going well. One can hope.

Another late addition to the 2024 season seems to be in the works. The rumours are that a US development side based out of Charlotte is joining the league for this season. It seems that WR are part funding the project, which would make sense as they would be desperate to get the US side up to scratch leading up to their world cup.
