Without question McFarland's coaching of scrum and maul is outstanding. However, it couldn't overcome Stockdale's inability to be coached in defensive skills.

For Ulster to score the second maul try when shorn of Henderson, Treadwell, Carter & Coetzee was terrific technique. To then take off Herring was, IMO, madness and deprived them of the chance to win that.

We should watch out tomorrow for the MontP LHP boring across on Ml Bent as that has been the French LHP tactic since September. Cyril Baille did it right through the first half as did the Bordeaux LHP against Saints.

Good display Ulster but Toulouse have becomee a mean pack with great backline talent

Ulster maul was superb, Ireland should call up McFarland to coach this element of the game. Ulster really should have won tonight, some unforced errors at vital times set them back. Toulouse indebted to Kolbe's quick thinking and quicker feet.

thought both teams deserve credit for playing some great rugby. Agree that the ulster maul was excellent. thought they were odds on for a BP &win when they had those lineouts close to the toulouse line late on. Enjoyed the madigan try in the first half..it was like an old leinster move with the running loop in the build up.

Toulouse have a great team and while Ulster fans will be gutted...no shame losing to a team with the likes of kolbe in it. both his tries were incredible considering how much ulster cover was around him for both. he even had time to slip and fall, get up again and score for the second.

Agree but I thought Faddes held up the Gloucester try in the first half so it’s evened out.

This game will take about two hours despite no major injuries or things worth looking at. I know the TMO has been involved but I’d have said they either didn’t need to be checked or should have been done quicker.

Jesus...that’s some collapse. Not the best cameo from Rea with his knock on and the penalty.

He'll be driving home for Christmas.

At least three very big calls from the Ref / TMO in the final 10 minutes, none of which favoured Ulster. However, to have hauled themselves back into that lead with the two O'Connors and Timoney filling the ballast roles was a brilliant display and Cooney & McCloskey made huge contributions with Lowry & Stockdale close in attendance.

Watching the game it struck me that perhaps Irish rugby might have been better served if Thos Ahern and Jack Dunne had been on loan to Ulster in Kingsholm yesterday rather than facing each other in Thomond on Friday........but it just a fleeting flight of thought.

Tough luck Ulster. Improvement has been continuous but trying to get a place at the top table still requires some tall pines.

Interesting, I assume he'll be playing in the back row then?

Well from an ulster perspective he takes Coetzee's NIQ spot and from an IRFU perspective he takes Fardy's "back row" spot.

Hé offloads more than McCloskey and he’s offloaded a few problems there already. He’ll be fun. I think he’ll be the third Fijian to play for Ulster, at least that I know of. Can anybody get the other 2?
