Correction to stats on Duncan Casey 47/48 lineouts

Post by All Blacks nil »

Duncan Casey, the Munster hooker has thrown 48 lineouts so far this season with Munster winning 47 of them.

A little bit unsung, but that is a serious display of technical ability.
He is not a dynamic carrier, although he has good handling and retention skills. He won't be termed as a "beast " by anyone but this guy is getting the job done both in attack and defence and especially at lineout time.

A debutant last season because of injuries to Sherry and Varley, he has had an extended run and has not been found wanting.

Stat is all the more impressive after seeing both hookers in the Wasps - Leinster game penalised for crooked throws in the first 10 minutes.
and yes I know there is a wind.

He's a bit like Flannery - great Lineout but terrible in the scrum !

Foley on Off the Ball last night saying that he is a converted loosehead (from U20s level - Foley was his coach then).

Cronin manages ok even though he is unable to hook :)

We were all (i.e Munster fans), probably guilty of hyping up DUNCAN CASEY after his extraordinary start to the season when he was 40/41 (97.56%) in lineout accuracy. Unfortunately since then his game has imploded and he has since missed 3 lineouts.
His stats have regressed to a lowly 66/70 (94.28%) which is clearly not good enough. I know he scored 2 tries the weekend and once more led the tackling stats (13/0) but a hookers job is to throw decent lineout.

His tackling has been generally good this season, though he will have to cut out the missed tackles.
v Edinburgh 33 mins 3/1
v Treviso 78 mins 6/0
v Zebre 50 mins 11/0
v Ospreys 80 mins 6/0
v leinster 39 mins 4/0
v Sale 80 mins 13/0
v Saracens 73 mins 10/1
v Dragons 74 mins 13/0

total minutes played 507 - tackles 66/68 (97%)

How does that compare to his rivals for a spot in Joe's RWC squad?
Best
Total minutes played for Ulster 466 - tackling 45/52 (86%)
Cronin
minutes played for Leinster this season 495 - tackles 31/39 (79%)
Strauss 193 - tackling 24/27
minutes played for Leinster 193 tackling 24/27 (89%)

His presence in defence has been most influential especially when you consider that Munster have only conceded five tries when he has been on the pitch.
Perhaps he could get 10 minutes for the Wolfhounds, although I see Wardy has one of the Byrne twins ahead of him in today's Indo.

Now if he could only get his lineout throwing up to the required standard.

Not good enough I'm afraid, and having turned 24 last week time is running out for him.

Aaron Dundon should have been Irish hooker. Fine scrummager also.

For some reason the hype machine didn't take off on him.

.....And a new briefing for his PR Rep O'Reilly in the Sunday Times. Casey may or may not have been throwing in almost perfectly before this weekend but on Friday he lost a couple and threw at least three others crooked although they were not pinged by Davies. Seriously over-hyped. Move along, nothing to see here.

The worst thing that can ever happen to an irish person is that the find or get tipped for success, because you can be guaranteed that there will be bitter nobody's biding their time to run that person down.

The young frontrow had a game that is the norm for every other irish hooker, but, fortunately for casey this is not the norm for him.
Just because a post upsets you, that doesn’t mean that it is wrong. People have different views in all aspects of life, this is a key ingredient to an interesting conversation.

Plenty of players get tipped for success few have stats and comparisons posted across multiple threads. Fewer still have bizarre thread titles in there honour or people talking them up while not actually talking them up. No one has a problem with Casey.
Ruddock's tackle stats consistently too low for me to be taken seriously as a Six Nations blindside..... Ruddock's defensive stats don't stack up. - All Blacks Nil, Jan 15th, 2014

Casey's stats did indeed take a bashing on Friday as he completed a career low 10/14 lineouts. His four missed lineouts doubled his tally for the season. He even missed 2 tackles which unfortunately also doubled his count for the season.

As you are interested his stats now read
Lineouts 76/84 or 90.47%
Tackles 75/79 or 94.93%
It would be interesting to see how other's stats stack up in what is an essential part of the game and as you can see easily evaluated.
Casey's crooked throw on Friday was as far as I can recall his first crooked lineout this season. I am open to correction as I may have missed one in Cardiff or Newport.

Casey got done for a crooked throw on Friday night but Best got away with at least two. I wonder are refs so used to seeing crooked throws from Best that they let less obvious ones off ;-)
