The more I think about the Kiss appointment the less I like it. If he's just there as a figurehead and sounding board then fair enough, but I'd worry about much else. Defence and attack are already well covered, a forwards coach would surely have made more sense if it was to be someone who was going to have a real impact, cant imagine Bell would be enthused by much else. Wonder if McGlaughlin will be involved again?
Rennie was the guy I wanted for the Irish job. I would say if he was approached for even that job, he would have knocked it back as he's very highly rated in NZ and is the national coach in waiting as long as he pays his dues and bides his time.
I've spoken with a number of Kiwis here and over there and, while they're always respectful of Irish rugby, they generally admit that it's generally not rated in NZ. Coaching here holds very little sway back there in terms of progression; if you want to move up the ladder there, you need to be based there. No All Blacks coach has ever been appointed while based outside of NZ.
McLaughlin will possibly have some involvement in the set up but I would say there's a better chance of Allen Clarke getting the nod. He's a forwards coach, heads up the academy and Ravens and already has a working relationship with the national side and Kiss from his time as high performance manager of the IRFU.
