Niall Ronan, James Coughlan and Paddy Butler is an extremely mediocre unit to be going into a HEC match with. It's scary to think that four years ago, they'd go into a match with Wallace, Leamy and Quinlan and pummeling sides into submission.

They could have picked a backrow of DOC2, Dougal and Stander which are all physically a step up from Ronan, Coughlan and Butler. I can't understand the logic of that backrow.

Did you have to pose a question like that? Now I'll be trying to figure it out for the rest of the day!

Leicester is one anyway - Slater, Salvi, Crane. The first 2 are uncapped, Crane has 2 or 3 caps.

And Castres, Gloucester, Connacht, Exeter and Glasgow! All 5 or less caps in their back row.

Very disappointing to see Conway stretching his legs with the Munster A's at the weekend in the British & Irish cup rather than making their Heineken Cup 23.

Maybe a fitness issue, but can't see him being included this weekend either, unless Zebo is out, he might make the bench.

Well, well.

It was always going to be an interesting game: two teams who finished in the lower echelons of the league. Both teams scraped their way to a Cup semi-final in recent years. Both teams are used to playing in empty stadiums - devoid of atmosphere, although Munster only play in musGrave occasionally. Edinburgh had home advantage, Munster were c~*k-of-the walk after an impressive and deserved victory against Leinster*** in the Home of Rugby. Unfortunately, Munster's hype machine went into overdrive. They thought they'd run out winners with a four try bonus point.

They should've checked the history books. Even the great European sides, teams like Toulouse and Leinster, have learnt that beating Edinburgh in Murrayfield is never a gimme. You just can't take the win for granted. And that is what Munster did. They, their fans and their media fan-boys reckoned that all they needed to do was turn ip.

And that's all they did. Turn ip.

Edinburgh sensed the disrespect. Lads put their hands up and did unseen work. Fellas wore their jerseys with pride and honesty. Men stood up and fought. Edinburgh lads, that is. Not even the Presence of Paulie could save his team.

However, Munster are in the same position as they were last year. A losing bonus point away from home after the first round - and they got all the way to the semis then. Their group is an even handier one this year. Munster can and should still win it. As for Edinburgh, whilst they mightn't surprise anyone else in the campaign, one thing is for sure: they stood against ye, the proud Red army, And sent ye homeward, tae think again.

Well that was a shock.
I always want our teams to beat foreign teams unless (not unreasonably) it's not in Leinster's best interest.
I didn't see the game so I'm going to make a wild guess as to why Munster lost.
Beating Leinster last week probably impacted on the performance but it's my guess Paulie carried too much and didn't do the hard graft that a second row needs to be doing when the chips are down. Did Murray start - Not a good idea as a first game:
Demur if you disagree.
Munster have plenty of time to turn this around but it will be to their credit if they do.

That wasn't really the story of the game at all Oldschool. Paulie did play, and Murray did start but he was probably Munster's best player by a distance. In fact he set up the first try by ignoring Paulie, who everyone expectd to get the ball before charging 50cm over the gainline. Murray skipped him and passed to Laulala who scored.

They were very lackadaisical though. I do think they took the win for grnted, and felt a bit too good about themselves after beating Leinster. They took 20 minutes to wake up and gave Embra a 10 point start. But wake up they did and they mauled Edinburgh for 40 minutes, but couldn't put them away. Then it all went a bit Scotland v Ireland from last season. They lost a ridiculous try and didn't ahve the composure to get back into the match. Discipline and tactics and execution turned to puke in the final 20 and in the end they were lucky to get out with their losing bp.

Just me or does Ronan carry too much ball for Munster? especially close in/hard yard carries
smallest guy in the pack and he gets turned over a bit, plus IMO he would be better served used out wide/in support

Will this be Conways chance to shine? Although any winger may struggle to shine playing outside of Downey and Lualua, Munster need a passer in their midfield

Lighten up will ya. It's funny. Well done in fact. Loved this part: "Lads put their hands up and did unseen work. Fellas wore their jerseys with pride and honesty." Reads like any Declan kidney interview, or 90% of the bogger GAA stuff on RTE.

Luckily Munster might pick their form back three now because Zebo certainly shouldn't be in it.

Yep, he looks like he was coasting a bit, while Murphy really hit the ground running.

Murphy is a much better player than people give him credit for, at least in my opinion. When he arrived at Munster for the 2010-11 season he was – again, in my opinion – their best and most threatening back up until Christmas [10 of Doug Howlett's 14 tries that season came from February onwards], and I think he was picked in every jersey from 11 to 15 over the course of fourteen or fifteen games. It didn't seem to matter to him what position he was selected in. He had come from that hard-working Leicester background, and he just got on with things.

He never got much respect for it though – he was on of these Premiership orphans, who provincial crowds don't really get behind to the same extent as somebody who came through the academy, or even somebody who arrived from another province. It's strange, sometimes people seem to either put aside or not really pay much attention to what happens on the pitch and instead invest all their time arguing about a narrative that isn't all that accurate.

The guy has played almost 150 first class matches [i.e. HEC, ACC, AP & Pro12] for two of the biggest clubs in Europe in Leicester and Munster [source: http://www.itsrugby.co.uk/player_5760.html ]. He started the 2009 Premiership final [source: http://www.leicestertigers.com/rugby/1282.php ] and had an extremely solid four seasons at Leicester: 77 starts, 22 appearances off the bench and 28 tries [source: http://www.leicestertigers.com/rugby/le ... ef=dynamic ]. He can play.

I thought Murphy was awful when he went to Munster but had a lot of sympathy for him because he was in such an average back line and kept being shifted around. He seemed to just completely lose his confidence but I don't go along with the idea that he was overrated in the AP. He's a good player and will do well if picked consistently and in his best position.

He certainly lost his way but he has always been a talented fellow. He had a pretty good record at Leicester, as Hugo says, and they don't hand out HEC starts to anyone. He kept Tuilagi out of the side at one point and was scoring tries regularly.

He didn't hit the ground running at Munster and, when that happens, it's hard to win over the media and fans. They have a grá for their local heroes and will always back them ahead of the returning prodigal son. McGahan was clearly a fan and persisted with him but he never really sparked and, when Penney came in, he was pretty much left on the sidelines. He was only given one start before late February.

This season he has looked a more complete player than he has done at any point since returning to Ireland though. He was one bright spot in some of their showings this season and was very hard done by to be left out of the squad last weekend.

Trying to placate Earls/play him in his best position/get the best balance for the team didn't help either. It didn't just halt his progress, it affected other players who didn't know if they were coming or going. Really poor management IMO.
