Earls isn’t. Keenan is and there’s a few other guys injured. Larmour is ahead of him with a few games under his belt too.

Rhys has never started a Six Nations game. That is astounding.

That is astonishing.
Actually it's a disgrace and doesn't reflect well on the current coach, his predecessors and the people doling out the central contracts.

Keenan is a full back. Larmour hasn't had a few games under his belt.

I do not doubt you are correct, but I thought Schmidt picked him to start at 7 in the 6N

I think he was picked and played 7 against South Africa in an Autumn International. Scored a try that day I seem to recall.

Yep. Played in five 6N games, all as replacement. The last one was against Scotland in Mar 2016, nearly 5 years ago.
The last time he played for Ireland was against the All Blacks at the 2019 RWC.

Experimental wrote: February 3rd, 2021, 1:47 pm I know hendo hasnt played much rugby, but I feel we need him in the engine room for this one. I would like to see Tadgh Beirne starting, maybe at six, the Welsh fear him, and hes been by far our best poacher, I think theres even an argument to play him at seven at the moment the way hes playing (maybe later in the tournament). Will be interesting to see the outcome of this highly contested area.
That is actually a good idea.
Having a backrow of Beirne, POM and Stander with Ryan and Hendo in the row would be a serious back 5.

It would be a pest at the breakdown and provide plenty of lineout targets.
Ruddock on the bench would augment the power available in the BR.
Dillane SR cover?
For me if Ruddock doesn’t start then he will bench.
He and Coombes are more versatile than VDF and Conners.

Anyone have any news on Dorris?

I am kind of worried about this one. When a player with a history of concussions shows concussion like symptoms without a clear reason can not be a good thing.

Jones has selected a penalty machine front-row. If Scotland take every opportunity offered, they could win that game without needing to score a try

Surprised Larmour isn’t starting 14 but that’s the team anyway what I’ve been told from a very reliable source

Would be surprised by 1 and 11 if that is right. Also not a fan of the back row.

VDF is a much better player than Connors and should be there ahead of him all day long.
Connors has one key strength which is to chop tackle big ball carriers, but that is a very limiting role, and can be exploited by the opposition.

Not sure Killer should be starting. When fit he is brilliant, but he has very few minutes in his legs over the last few weeks, likewise with Lowe.

I can understand why Larmour isn’t there. Wales are very good in the air, and will test our back 3. Larmour would have had a big target on his chest for this game after his display against Munster.

I am delighted for Beirne, he has been brilliant for Munster this season, and well deserves his spot.

My concern for this game is the bench. We need to have big impact, which for me would be:
Healy, Kelleher, Furlong, Hendo, Coombes, JGP, Billy B.

I think it Ruddock will be on the bench, and I will have no gripes about that, I just think that Coombes carrying would be brilliant for the last 20 mins.

If that is our starting pack, I'd be worried.

Particularly from 4-8, I think that Beirne and the backrow have shown to be too light at this level previously, so will need to step it up quite a bit.

To me, Ryan, Hendo, Ruddock, POM, CJ is a far better selection at test level. If you are going to start Beirne (which is probably warranted on form) then that backrow trio we've selected just doesn't have enough power imo.

Not sure how Killer and Lowe get in there either, but at least RH starts ahead of Aki.
