Ireland u20 2021

Post by erskinechilders »

Do we think the u20 6 Nations will go ahead this year? If so, what will our squad look like? I know there are a number of players returning from last years' team. I know they held a camp in the last few weeks but not certain of which players were there. These are the players still eligible from last years' team:

Tim Corkery ( Outhalf )
Cathal Forde ( Outhalf )
Dan Kelly ( Centre ) ( unlikely to play as he play regularly for Leicester Tigers )
Joe McCarthy ( Second Row )
Conor McKee ( Wing )
Ben Moxham ( Centre / Wing )
Ben Murphy ( Scrumhalf )
Harry O'Riordan ( Centre )
Alex Soroka ( Backrow )
Tom Stewart ( Hooker )

The following Leinster players were spotted at the Irish u20 camp ( credit to Mildlyinterested ) :

Jack Boyle(LH Prop/St. Michaels) - u19
Aaron Rowan(LH Prop/Blackrock) - u19
Lee Barron(Hooker/St. Michaels)
Ronan Loughnane(Hooker/Roscrea)
Sam Illo(TH Prop/Wesley)
Ben Griffin(TH Prop/Castleknock)
Mark Morrissey(Lock/Blackrock) - u19
Will Hickey(Backrow/St. Michaels)
Aaron Coleman(Backrow/Belvedere)
Mark Boyle(Backrow/Gorey RFC)
Will Reilly(Scrumhalf/Portloaise RFC)
Harry Colbert(Outhalf/Gonzaga)
Marcus Kiely(Centre/Newbridge)
Chris Cosgrave(Back Three/St. Michaels)
Matthew McGetrick(Wing/Terenure)

I read an article about the ladies 6 nations and the issue they could run into is whether each government classes ladies as "elite" athletes for the purposes of playing, travelling ect. Could the 20s face the same problem? Could they be put in a bubble? Would that be too costly given current financial situation?

thanks, wasn't sure on them.

Listed them more because they were capped at u18 level for this age grade. I know Mcalpine is in the ulster sub-academy, not sure about O'Malley, tho I know he was playing with UCD u20's at the start of the season.

It's a good question. I suspect that the tournament will be postponed, a la the women's edition. The countries involved are more likely to be in a better situation with regards to the spread of [and vaccination against] Covid-19 in April.

There is only a quite small overlap in terms of playing personnel and/or staff between the U20s and the professional sides, so this wouldn't unduly stress playing strength in terms of the pro game, i.e. they would not complain or get in the way of the fixtures being moved.

"The likelihood is that there will be no World Junior Championship in 2021 and that the Six Nations or a version of that tournament will take its place in June or July."

Sounds like McNamara could have a different job in the summer.

The Women’s Six Nations and Under-20s competitions, which are traditionally run in tandem with the men’s, are set to be postponed until April and May, with official confirmation of their delay expected on Wednesday.

France Under 20s played Italy Under 20s today.... France won 25-24

Link if anyone wants to watch it....

Surprised, would have thought under 20s Rugby wouldn't be played at the moment given the current numbers.

Edited to add I'm actually not surprised they played after having a look at their Covid numbers.... It seems not every country made an utter sh*té of it over Christmas like we did

It wasnt France's main 20s. They are at a training camp in Portugal right now. It was their development 20s side

The U20s Six Nations will take place across June and July in the same format as originally planned, but through a condensed 3-week period. The tournament is expected to start on 19 June.

Further fixture dates, venues and kick off times for both tournaments will be announced in due course.
