Re: Sevens
24-7 up against France now in semi-final and won't be caught. Superb display. Kennedy x2, Roche & Andrew Smith with tries.
Unfortunately, the Women's team ran into the in-form Aussies 7-40 and will now play Fiji in the 3rd place Play-off.

Other semi in Mens between Samoa & Fiji just starting. Ireland already beaten in Pool game by Samoa
And Fiji emerge winners with 28-7. A tough ask

Re: Sevens
And Fiji win both Men's and Women's games.
Incredible, imagine a year ago being disappointed to finish 2nd & 4th in World Series events with every Nation competing!

Was chatting with Terry Kennedy sr. the other day, never seen a man as proud of his young lad. Nice to see

Watched some of the 7's yesterday. Is Kennedy not worth a contract with one of the provinces?

Re: Sevens
Jordan Conroy tore up the 7's scene when he first came in, was signed by Connacht for a year and never played a game. Some players are just built for 7's and not for 15's. Probably worth a punt though.
Re: Sevens
What's the conversion rate like?
It seems like great players do well in 7s then 15s - cream rises to the top either way.
7s doesn't seem to unearth any players who weren't already promising.

Re: Sevens
I'm always in the minority but I see 7s as competition for "proper rugby".
Its a completely separate sport with mainly specialist players and while rugby union players can benefit from the skills that's (for me) the same as them benefitting from rugby league tactics and skills.
Best of luck to any 7s players who represent Ireland especially the Olympians. But my support for them comes from my national allegiance rather than me being a rugby fan.
I see it as having zilch to do with the rugby I enjoy.
Re: Sevens
It's competition in that money, players, time, effort and resources get dragged away from 15s with a weak suggestion that it will come back in kind.
They conditioning goals of 7s v 15s players indicate the difference too.

I like your right leg. A lovely leg for the role.
I've got nothing against your right leg.
The trouble is ... neither have you

But not Hugo Keenan, Jimmy O'Brien or Will Connors all of whom treated it as an alternate pathway to improve skills they would use on return to 15's.The Doc wrote: ↑June 2nd, 2022, 7:38 amYou'll find one or two of the posters here are of the same viewdougie the flanker wrote:I'm always in the minority but I see 7s as competition for "proper rugby".

Re: Sevens
Keenan and O'Brien play a combination outhalf, winger, fullback position. 7s helped that happen because it developed that hybrid skillset.
Not sure about Connors. My impression was that Hugh Hogan contact skills led him to bolt.

Re: Sevens
A) do you think that any of those players didn't have the ability to succeed in 15s regardless?Ruckedtobits wrote: ↑June 2nd, 2022, 9:35 amBut not Hugo Keenan, Jimmy O'Brien or Will Connors all of whom treated it as an alternate pathway to improve skills they would use on return to 15's.
B) those players shout it from the rooftop (like Joey Carbery still does about his opportunity to go to Munster) because they are repeating the party (Nucifora's) line which right now really helps when contract renegotiation and I have no doubt Ireland squad selections come around.
C) as employees in academy/dev players they don't have a huge amount of wiggle room to refuse playing 7s if they don't want to either
D) As to my original point it's not a good conversion rate for what is a different sport dragging resources away from 15s

Re: Sevens
A) I’m quite sure that there’s lots of players with the ability that never get into the academy in the first place for one or another reason. Sevens is a path that some have travelled.Morf wrote: ↑June 2nd, 2022, 7:27 pmA) do you think that any of those players didn't have the ability to succeed in 15s regardless?Ruckedtobits wrote: ↑June 2nd, 2022, 9:35 amBut not Hugo Keenan, Jimmy O'Brien or Will Connors all of whom treated it as an alternate pathway to improve skills they would use on return to 15's.

B) not sure what this one is about, but there’s a bang of munsterfans conspiracy theory about it
C) I doubt anyone plays sevens if they don’t want to, it’s a pretty tough sport, it’s no walk in the park
D) I don’t buy into the draining money from 15s point at all, it’s a good sport and worthy of support.
That is all…
Re: Sevens
I wonder how many players who are 18/19 and are rejected by the academy and are facing a year in the sub academy see 7s as a back up rugby career.
If I don't get a full contract with Leinster I might play for Munster or Ulster or Connacht.
If Ulster Munster or Connacht don't want me maybe I can get a job playing sevens.
Ok the sevens money isn't great but it might keep a player going for a bit while hoping to be picked up abroad or finish alternative education. A lot of fringe players see going to academy as a financial risk so having another potential income stream for graduates can be a valuable thing for them.

Men's Sevens Progress to Quarter- Final in Los Angeles
Ireland beat France (12-10l, Wales (46-12) before going down to Fiji (7-21) in Los Angeles to progress to the Quarter-Final round today against NZ.
Aus v Ken, Fiji v USA, Argentina v Samoa, & NZ v Ire are the quarter-final pairings and Ireland have done very well to come 5hrough to meet a strong, unbeaten NZ team.
No Britzboks or English or French but Kenya play Aussies and Argentina face Samoa with everything to play for.
Terry Kennedy seems to have started well and Chay Mullins has scored in two games.

Beaten by NZ in Quarter Final.
NZ won Tournament beating Fiji in final. But Aussies won World Series for the year as did their Women in May. Aus rugby very pleased with these shots in the arm

Re: Sevens
Ireland finished 5th in the world series. Its worth noting that our 5th is slightly tainted by NZ missing a bunch of events. They would be very likely to beat us.
GB are combining for next years sevens and Uruguay are promoting from the lower tier so there will be 15 core teams.
Next season's top 4 qualify for the 2024 Olympics. Then there will be a European qualifier and a repechage qualifier.
The Irish women finished 4th in their world series which was also joint second. Japan is getting promoted to be a core team and team GB will unite.

Re: Sevens
In all likelihood we'll be relying on the repechage again - GB likely to take the European spot (ourselves and France in with a shout too), with four of the following five making up the top four in the series table: New Zealand, South Africa, Fiji, Australia, Argentina.naraic wrote: ↑August 29th, 2022, 11:32 pm Ireland finished 5th in the world series.
