A tough start as a core team as Ireland lost to the USA and Australia before redemption in beating Scotland, a game where Jordan Conroy scored an astonishing five tries

Ireland lose to Spain in the 11th place playoff. Ireland could have snatched it at the end when they won a penalty with the clock in the red, Dardis put in a lovely grubber but Conroy fumbled the catch with the line at his mercy

Munsters new skills development coach, New Zealander Mike Pettman, said 7s is "massive" for players to develop skills.

A good win against the Aussies by 26-21 to start their programme. First up tomorrow in Cape Town are Samoa.

The players also say it. I'm not a big fan of the sport but I can see the benefits in polishing rough diamonds and also introducing young people to rugby through 7s. There are also rural schools and clubs that might not have the numbers for 15s.

A second win this morning over Samoa and joint top of Pool D with Kenya. We're matched with Pool A where SA & going gang-busters having beaten Fiji this morning.

Keep it going lads, Cape Town is a little warmer there this morning than Dublin!

Ireland draw final game against Kenya (missed conversion in injury time) but win Pool D and qualify for Q/Fs as Pool WINNERS.

Well done Ireland.

Try wheels Conroy converted 7-0

Try Fiji converted 7-7

Try on half-time Fiji converted 7-14

Class try from Kennedy conversion missed 12-14

Cheap try for Fiji conversion missed 12-19

Try Fiji converted 12-26

Another try at the end for Fiji conversion missed, 12-31 defeat. We are getting better but Fiji looked like they could up the ante when ever they wanted, we labour a bit, could do with another out and out speedster.

7s isnt really that great for introducing people to play rugby or at least to have them play rugby regularly as it is so different to the 15s game. There isnt anywhere near enough 7s to be played for areas without numbers for 15s. What clubs dont have numbers for 15s. If they dont they need to be combining with other clubs to field at 15s as 7s would only ever be a very short season and not long enough to do and had to be ran alongside the 15s season

7s is an excellent way to introdce all players to the core basics of the game- positioning, catch the ball and pass it, be effective in a ruck, make good decisions, create and defend space, tackle well etc. There's no hiding place!
It's not a coincidence that most (if not all) of the current NZ backs and many Springboks have played in the World Series. SA 15s have had flankers, and backs that started in 7s. As well as technical aspects they use it as a programme to allow younger players to mature and perform in a professional environment.

Maybe thats why NZ have been so poor recently, too many players playing a different sport. Of the World Cup winning Springboks, only Kolbe played for the Blitzboks.

NZ have no interest in using sevens as a programme to allow younger players mature and perform in a professional environment, they use it to disqualify players with multiple international options.

Just as well Aaron Sexton is in the picture then. Might force himself into a few tournaments before Ulster take him back.

Haven't seen Sexton in a one on one on a rugby pitch against another lightning quick player. But apparently he would leave Carlin Isles and Conroy for dead
He's gotten awfully fond of that brick

He wouldn't leave either for dead.

Aaron Sexton's 100 metres PB is 10.48, Isles' 100 metres PB is 10.13 (he used to be a pro sprinter), and 0.35 seconds is a big difference for that distance. Conroy is almost as quick as Isles, actually has a higher 'fastest speed recorded' than Isles and matched him over 60 metres in scoring an intercept try last year. Conroy, for all his flaws, is in the top five quickest people ever to get paid to play a form of rugby.

That's quite a big claim.

Dwain Chambers 9.97 (9.87 discounted for drug use) https://worldathletics.org/athletes/gre ... bers-50331 also 5th fastest man and joint 10th fastest time in history over 60m with 6.42s http://www.alltime-athletics.com/m60mok.htm. Played two (?) games for Castleford's second team in rugby league.

Warren Weir 10.02 100m, 19.79 200m, 46.23 400m https://www.worldathletics.org/athletes ... eir-224247. Olympic 200m bronze medallist from London 2012 who has supposedly played 7s for Jamaica https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Weir

Trae Williams 10.10 https://www.worldathletics.org/athletes ... ams-278956 currently in the Aussie 7s set-up.

Carlin Isles 10.15 (10.13 was wind-assisted, has also run 6.65 60m and 21.04 200m) https://www.worldathletics.org/athletes ... les-246131 USA 7s player

Aaron Sexton 10.43 100m, 20.69 200m ttps://www.european-athletics.org/athletes/gro ... index.html

Nigel Walker 10.47 100m, 6.65 60m (10.35 100m wind-assisted) https://www.worldathletics.org/athletes ... alker-3069 Welsh 110m hurdler turned rugby winger

I'm probably forgetting somebody obvious. Any other verified fast times out there?

Apparently McDonald Bailey, joint world record holder with 10.2 for 100m, played one game for Leigh against Wigan in 1953 https://www.independent.co.uk/news/obit ... 04323.html. Didn't know that.

From the point at which both are sprinting, Isles gains a metre at most over 50 metres+: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bJXVIqgLz0

Also, Conroy has the fastest max speed ever recorded in sevens (joint with Isles), at 37 km/hr.
