Re: Leinster Academy 22-23
Wouldn't be in huge agreement with Des Berry's assessment of that game.
Take the scrum for instance. The referee seemed to believe that because Jack Boyle was playing in Blue, any scrum which ended up in a (left) wheel was because Jack was in charge. One of his colleagues must have briefed him at h-t as he had a closer look at the contest after the break , on the other side, where Saunderson was persecuting Lesisi. A couple of penalties against the Leinster man and the No 18 Blue (Ben Griffin) was taking his place in the THP role. The impact was instantaneous and the Leinster scrum was undisturbed until the end and gave a good platform for SH & No 8 to explore the options.
Leinster full-back Osborne has lots of skills and sharp running is amongst them. Unfortunately off-loading to team-mates in better positions is not. Both Leinster wings look good footballers and finishers. They could have had more opportunities.
Boyle was decent, Leane, Culhane & Molony were well in evidence. But Cormac Daly was the pick of the Leinster pack. Good line-out. Good scrum worker and he was one of perhaps four Leinster forwards who understood the importance of body height in the numerous line-out mauls which peppered the second-half. He got low and worked his way through to the Ulster ball carrier on at least three occasions to secure scrum turnovers for Leinster.
In truth the game was scrappy with neither side taking much care of hard won possession. Ulster's line-kicking from penalties infinitely superior to that of either Lynch or Tector, neither of whom seem to appreciate how much a pack of forwards love to jog up to a line-out 10 Mtrs out, rather than one on the 22m line.
Lots of interested watchers with selectorial responsibility for higher levels were present. They will have been impressed by some, but probably disappointed by more. Jack Boyle went off with a knee / ankle problem caused in being driven backwards on a steal. Hopefully, nothing too serious.
The Ulster pack could have dominated this, if either of their two Irish U.20 captains was in the back-row. Neither were, so the Ulster pack looked, and played, like a collection of keen, but unrelated talented youngsters.
A good win for Leinster in a poor contest.

Seems McElroy isn't injured!
I wonder is Vakh injured considering he's not named in any squad this weekend?
