The Quickening 2022

Post by johng »

Hi Folks.
As promised A look at the last 5/6 rounds of the Inaugural URC Season

This is the 10th such thread as far as I can make out. They ran from 2012 to 2020. They became less relevant with conferences and 2021 was just not interesting enough to get one.

This one looks tasty.

No European team has yet won on South African soil and the next 4 rounds are home games for SA sides.

Factor in that they have a round of derbies in the middle when we have euro games AND that they will have a break week at Easter.... Things look rosy for the Saffers.

There are other catch up games also but they are all between Welsh and Italian teams so I have not included them. Things not looking rosy for Welsh teams

Key game between the Stormers and the Bulls on the 9th of April will decide which of those go into the scrap for top 4 along with the Sharks

Scottish teams have the benefit of playing the Italians 4 times but they have both played 3 of those already leaving the easiest game (Zebre at home) for both.

I believe the top 8 will be 3 Irish 3 Saffers and 2 Scottish. However despite the Italian advantage I don't see the Scots in the top 4.

Those places will be between the 3 Irish and top 2 Saffers IMHO.

Not sure how the below table will format on a phone but it looks grand on a PC. (I generally use "desktop site" settings on a phone anyway for anything with tables etc.)

Red Ink signifies an away game v another top 8 side and green ink is a game against a side outside the top 8.

Team R14 R15 R13 R16 R17 R18
Leinster	Connacht (A)	Munster Sharks Stormers	Munster
Ulster Stormers	Bulls Munster Embra Sharks
Munster Treviso Leinster Ulster Cardiff Leinster

Glasgow Cardiff (A)	Zebre Stormers Bulls Embra
Embra Sharks Lions (A) Zebre Ulster Glasgow

Sharks Embra Dragons Lions Leinster	Connacht	Ulster
Stormers Ulster Ospreys Bulls Glasgow Leinster	Scarlets
Bulls Dragons Ulster Stormers	Treviso Glasgow Ospreys (A)

Update. It actually looks grand on a phone. The [/pre tags tidy up well and you get a scroll bar at the bottom.

The fact that people used an app to access the forum is something I knew intellectually but never thought of.

There are 3 colour codes.

Green is games v non top 8 opposition.

Red is away game v potential top 8 opposition.

Black is home game v potential top 8 opposition.

Works for desktop site and mobile site.

So much for no euro teams winning in SA.

Grim enough here in Galway. Despite the unusual weather

No euro teams winning in SA was a brave call.
A number of games have been losing BPs to the visiting NH team.
The law of averages was against a no wins scenario even if it's the exception that proves the rule.
On top of that you don't know how strong the visiting NH teams will bring.

Had a quick look at Sharks v Embra.

Biblical downpour. Embra brought their first team inc all Scots internationals. Good to see the Sharks are not infallible

Embra could easily make it 2 out of 2 in SA. I'll have to revise my no Scottish teams top 4 prediction. Glasgow however losing in Cardiff......

I love this thread every year. Thanks so much for doing it.

Good on Edinburgh breaking the duck.
I'm not confident about our trip down there because I have my doubts we will be allowed to bring Irish internationals and the injuries are humming along at a disruptive level. Our squad (particularly in the backs) is pretty threadbare without them.

You never know how it will go down in Mordor but seven points out of our remaining four games doesn't seem overly pessimistic.
I'd have Ulster to get around 14, which would put them ahead of us.
We look fairly likely to be the top two anyway.

The Sharks and the Stormers will he highly motivated to take points away from us and hopefully get a home QF. Big challenge.

Munster got a big setback by not winning on their tour but they still are the team that could go either way. 3 of their 4 matches are against teams ahead of them.

Glasgow still have their SA tour.

Another factor to consider is the Welsh Shield. 3 Welsh provinces still have something to play for: Heineken Cup qualification. And with 2/3 of the Heineken Cup going through there's a good shot at knockout rugby.

Ulster go down in Pretoria to the Bulls with no TBP.

Would make a win tonight a big swing and put us 9/10 ahead with 3 games to go.

Yes. In a good place now with Munster and Ulster to take points off each other. And us having Munster at home on the last day.

A win later today would put one hand on top spot for us.
