Youngest try scorer

Post by Xanthippe »

Following Jamie Osborne’s try on Friday I decided to have a look at ages of our youngest try scorers - I’ve listed the youngest five here according to my figures but am happy to be corrected and would be delighted if anyone has any better information

Gordon D’Arcy - 18 years 221 days (DOB: 10/2/80 First try: 19/9/98)
Luke Fitzgerald - 19 years 46 days (DOB: 13/9/87 First try: 29/10/06)
Scott Penny - 19 years 62 days (DOB: 22/9/99 First try: 23/11/18)
Andrew Conway - 19 years 111 days (DOB: 11/7/91 First try: 30/10/10)
Rob Kearney - 19 years 162 days (DOB: 26/3/86 First try: 04/9/05)

Great digging, Xan. Presume this is professional-era only? Tony O'Reilly or some priest-in-training from the 1920s usually pop up to break a record on lists like this.

Yes it is - unfortunately I don’t have any pre 95 data. Also, there may be more in the professional era - I’m not finished looking but it’s a massive job to go back through DOBs and first score dates for everyone so I may never get finished. That’s why I’d be delighted if anyone else had any names to add to the list. What I’ve done so far is look back through my list of youngest players - at this point I’m really only going to be looking for anyone who made their debut at 18 or younger to see if anyone can beat Darce (I need to find him a new record to make up for Dev stealing his most caps one)

What I have is - but until now first try date wasn’t something I recorded.

I really enjoy stats so every time a question comes up that I haven’t previously considered I either add a new page or a new column to one of my spreadsheets.

D'Arcy made his debut at FB.
I remember because he knocked on the first bomb sent in his direction.
Did he score on his debut? Opposition Scarlets or Edinburgh perhaps
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall who's the greatest player of them all? It is Drico your majesty.

Johnny Quirke - retired Judge now - was the youngest Irish international from Leinster that I remember. Debuted for Ireland in 5 Nations v England in 1962 aged 17 yrs and 7 months - birthday July 1944. There were a number of new caps in a 16-0 defeat. He is the only U.18 player I remember at senior Representative level.

AJF 'Tony' O'Reilly was born in May 1936 and capped for Ireland in 1955, in the Five Nations, before his 19th birthday. I believe he played in an SCT cup final in 1954 for Belvedere just before his 18th b'day. He may have played (and scored) for Leinster in the 1954 Interpro Series but I cannot find any Team records of that era.

The citation for his induction into the IRB Hall of Fame in 2009 said he played for Leinster 11 times between 1956 and 1968 so that would rule him out.

Went through all the data I could find for everyone who's scored a try for Leinster since 1995. Couldn't find dates of birth for four players who played in the 90's.

Youngest try scorers (and who they were scored against) - hard to imagine that particular Darce record being beaten

1 Gordon D'Arcy - 18 years 221 days - (Llanelli 19 September 1998*)
2 Luke Fitzgerald - 19 years 46 days - (Edinburgh 29 October 2006*)
3 Scott Penny - 19 years 62 days - (Ospreys 23 November 2018)
4 Andrew Conway - 19 years 111 days - (Edinburgh 30 October 2010)
5 Jamie Osborne - 19 years 123 days - (Ospreys 19 March 2021)
6 Rob Kearney - 19 years 162 days - (Ospreys 4 September 2005)
7 Cian Healy - 20 years 5 days - (Glasgow 12 October 2007)
8 Ciaran Scally - 20 years 8 days (Munster 23 October 1998)
9 Shane Horgan - 20 years 27 days (Ulster 14 August 1998)
10 Ciaran Frawley - 20 years 81 days (Southern Kings 23 February 2018)

Oldest try scorers in reverse order (Scott Fardy would've been the oldest if he'd grounded that chance in the first half)

10 Isaac Boss 34 years 352 days (Glasgow 27 March 2015)
9 Ollie Le Roux 34 years 359 days (Dragons 3 May 2008)
8 Hayden Triggs 35 years 2 days (Dragons 24 February 2017)
7 Eoin Reddan 35 years 64 days (Wasps 23 January 2016*)
6 Brian O'Driscoll 35 years 67 days (Munster 29 March 2014)
5 Isa Nacewa 35 years 176 days (Glasgow 14 January 2018*)
4 Guy Easterby 35 years 192 days (Scarlets 29 September 2006)
3 Scott Fardy 35 years 238 days (Glasgow 28 February 2020)
2 Mike Ross 35 years 320 days (Scarlets 6 November 2015)
1 Kevin Putt 36 years 70 days (Edinburgh 6 October 2000*)

4 scrumhalves in the oldest 10. 1 in the youngest. I think that says a lot (especially bescause Whittaker probably isn’t far off the list).

We’ve also kept locks late too.
