Is there not enough kids coming out of the English school system, without them having to poach ours, ffs?

I'm reminded of one of the ways Bayern München have kept themselves at the top of the Bundesliga in recent decades: they buy up standout players from other teams such as Dortmund, not because they need them, as the Bavarians have probably the best academy in the country, but primarily in order to deny them to the opposition.

I can see this being the norm (well maybe not the norm but happening more and more). No more will clubs be waiting outside the academy doors for our 'cast offs'. They'll be looking to get the nuggets before we can polish them.

This is a 'bigger then Leinster' problem though. I don't know what the IRFU can do but they need to take a look.

offer the top players academy contracts out of school, players still want to play for their province, is the sub-academy necessary in all cases?

Absolutely. The variation in maturity (both physical and for Pro rugby) and preparation of players is so varied that you need a period of assessment of a wide range of players, under broadly the same conditions, to be able to assess which players may come through to be successful rugby players.

Leinster's Schools and Youth systems are an intrinsic part of their development pathway, as is their sub-Academy. That was introduced after direct entry to the Academy had been in operation for 7/8 years, as a necessary intermediate development tool and it has worked.

Players being approached by English Clubs whilst in School is not a new phenomenon and it shouldn't be the reason for changing a successful system. If playing for your country isn't a core objective for any 18 year-old, they're playing the wrong sport. International rugby is the peak and that's where a talented player should be aiming.

There's an opening for a bit of double jobbing for you there.
Head Scout for school players for one of the England clubs. Exeter would be a club with that would come to mind.
