Year 2 Academy to senior contract. Well done. Frees up space in the academy for a row.

RYAN BAIRD, YOUR MISSION, should you accept it, IS TO BECOME AS STRONG, ATHLETIC AND AS BIG AN ANNOYANCE AS MARO ITOJE, by the last match of the 2023 6 NATIONS tournament, six months before RWC 2023 in France.

JOE McCARTHY, YOUR MISSION, should you accept it, IS TO BECOME AS EFFECTIVE AS TAGDH BEIRNE IN LINEOURS, TURNOVERS AND OPEN-FIELD RUNNING, before the first match of the 2023 6 NATIONS tournament, nine months before the 2023 RWC in France.

IMO, both of these young men are capable of taking on these Missions and achieving them and thus presenting themselves as viable candidates for selection for the Irish Squad in 2023 RWC.

BTW, it is automatically assumed that you will continue and improve your development in all of the other aspects of second-row play, notably scrummaging and maul play.

Good luck in your endeavours.

I don't think either player sees themselves as that sort of lock.

Both players would be doing well to develop in that time frame rather than be thinking of matching the top proponents of certain aspects of the game in their position.

Baird has been with Ireland but Molony has been picked for Leinster. Fitting the game-plan could be the reason but it's as easy to say that Baird is with Ireland as a long term investment.

One of the most important lessons about Beirne is that fitting to a mould is not always the best way to go. This article about Marcus Smith also interesting
https://www.the42.ie/marcus-smith-kiero ... 0-Mar2022/

McCarthy is an exciting player and a nice surprise. I'd heard some very positive comments but wasn't expecting anything so soon. He has a fair bit to go though.

Leinster's challenge is to move on from Toner and the way he stood out while figuring out a way to combine McCarthy, Baird and Soroka to our mutual benefit).

We're talking about up to 5 slots in a match day 23, so it's very doable.

He is massive, some late developer. It’s actually astonishing how much muscle he’s put on since school. He was half the size in 2019 he didn’t even stand out as big now look at him. Incredible.

No need for the tape to self destruct, you might want to replay it a few times.

Late developer? The lad's 20. We're getting too used to locks coming developed straight out of school - now an additional year is a late developer!

2019 is three years ago, in fairness. Sometimes it doesn't feel like it, but it is.

He never played Junior Cup was always on the 3rds team in school all the way up, he was small, then in Sixth year he played SCT, he only got big after school. He is a late developer.

Think your selling COT short but it's fantastic that we have three great prospects to choose from.

Faz senior had some glowing words of praise for 'Big Joe'. In fairness he's been pretty impressive in all his games to date for us.

Indeed COT has been very good. He's made some good carries in every match, been part of that dynamic ireland pack and I can't remember him making any mistakes. I see he's listed at 109kg and is 2.01m at the moment and can easily get to a standard 115kg or higher.

What height is Mangan?

wasn't there another "late developer", young lad from Clontarf, who had difficulty getting a regular spot on the Rock JCT and SCT teams in the mid 90's? Parents were doctors and his older sister did some podcasts not so long ago about the theory of Relativity.....what became of him....?

I wonder will Leinster bring in Morrisey this year and wait another year to bring in COT? If he's that young another year of sub-academy and U20's would probably be the best option.
