I have it on very good authority that he isn't being offered a contract extension (aka IRFU won't let us offer a new deal).

If true. That's not great from the IRFU. We donate both of the current starting 2nd rows to Ireland. Surely we deserve a bit of leeway on cover.

Having said that he could want to sign for an Aussie team to get a shot at wc

Sh*t news. We're within the NIQ quota, JGP qualifies through residency next year [i.e. we'll be below quota], and we've loaned Nagle to Ulster, where he has had probably the most successful spell of his career, playing in interpros and Heineken Cup games.

Fardy has been a huge positive to Leinster on the pitch, on the training field and off the grass. He's probably worth twice as much as he earns, and he's our only NIQ/NIE forward. He played a highly significant part in both cup and league wins last year while having absolutely no negative impact on the progress of James Ryan - a great balancing act by the coaches, which has been repeated this year.

Ireland has no pressing need for second rows with Toner, Ryan, Beirne and Henderson, then Dillane and Roux [with Kleyn qualifying next year].

Molony plays loads for Leinster - 75+ games in the last 3.5 seasons, and he's not even 25. He's never made an Irish training squad. Our academy second rows are in first year [Baird and Dunne] and second year [Dowling], and if they want to progress upwards, the guy they have to get past before anybody else is Mick Kearney, who's Irish.

To be frank, there's no good reason we shouldn't be allowed to re-contract Fardy.

Not only should we be resigning Fardy, but we should be building 6ft6 bunk beds in his spare room for our academy second row (and rangy blindside) nursery

It could be wrong, but that's what I was told anyway! I hate this 'mystery source' stuff I sometimes read, but here I am doing the same now. Sorry!

That would be hugely annoying if true. Can't see any good reason for not allowing us to at least offer a contract to Fardy. In a recent Murray K piece the scenario seemed much rosier, with him hinting that IRFU wouldn't stand in the way.

A very good summary of our case. We (STH) should fight this. If true, we need to get confirmation that Leo & Stuart want to keep him and then plan what's the most effective way to change the mind of DN - there's always a way

Maybe we won't be allowed to keep him because we haven't given him enough game time.

If true absolutely terrible news, especially with the RWC next season. The IRFU were wrong when they thought Hines was too old for a contract extension, and regardless of the justification for not letting Fardy stay on they're wrong again if this is true.

Unfortunately we are victims of our own success.
Nathan Hines not being offered a new contract had nothing to with his age.
We'd have done the triple HEC wins with him.
Not being allowed extend his contract was a huge hammer blow to our chances because we didn't have an adequate replacement for him.
Everyone knows this, even the dogs on the street.
Do go figure but don't take too long.

Finally our 3 non European rule situation is solved after 2 years of hassle and it becomes moot.

Unfortunate if true.

Nathan may tell the full story at some point. At that time, we only offered over-30s one-year contracts. That changed with Jamie, but he was on a National Contract as is Sean O'Brien at present. JS had a part in the decision as did IRFU, Eddie Wigglesworth. However, despite how the backstory has developed legs over the years, it was not straighforward and not all the fault of IRFU.

We would have won three in a row if we had a front row to play Toulouse in 2010. That was our real chance.

We had a front row to play Toulouse in 2010. His name was Mike Ross and his coming on stabilised the scrum. Unfortunately, Cheika just didn't like him.

If we had won in 2010 we would have done four in a row.
