Zane Kirchner selected in the Springbok Squad for the RC :(

Post by johng »

Arse of the biscuits. I was hoping he would get here for the start of season. Possibly won't get much game time. There are only 4 back 3 players though.

Presume he'll get called up for the AI's too, so it'll be December before we get him

Isn't he technically contracted to the SARU until the end of the Currie Cup? It'd be difficult for him to reject a call up while still contracted.

When he begins his Leinster contract I imagine it should be a different matter.

Where do you guys see Kirchner fitting in? I have only ever known him to play 15, do you think Kearney will shift to a wing or will Kirchner be played on the wing?

Leinster cannot prevent him playing for South Africa during the designated international windows, doesn't matter who he's contracted to.

I didn't say Leinster could stop him. It'd be easier for him to choose not to make himself available at Leinster rather than when he's on a SARU contract.

Correct as we have to do without Pienaar each year, he will return 4 days before our first HEC match then vanishes again for the AI matches

With RP being first choice in a very specialised position, I would envisage the demand for his selection is higher than it will be for ZK (although this may change with the recall of Fourie du Preez). Whilst certainly a possibility, I'd think there's a decent chance that ZK will be omitted from the autumn squad. Guys like Willie Le Roux and Pat Lambie are 23 and 22 respectively and could well be given the bulk of game time from here on in.

Huh?!!! We all do- of course!
Jaysus, like him as a signing or not, we don't lay out all that moolah and not take an interest in having him available when we want him! :x

Just don't think he'll be a starting player for us in our first team, unless we're hit with a load of back three injuries again, so not hugely bothered when he arrives to be honest.

Cue the outrage and knashing of teeth.

Because we have shedloads of back 3 players eh?

Fergus McFadden plus the often injured Luke Fitz and Dave Kearney. That's it for the wingers.

Kearney senior will be out for a while too. So by "a load of injuries" you mean any at all.

Here is where you tell us that Hudson is a far superior player to the 83 times capped springbok.... Or perhaps some of the academy players?

Edit Sorry. 83 super rugby caps. Only 24 springbok

If ZK was here from the outset, I'm sure he'd rack up 20+ starts for us this season. Similar to someone like Balshaw, it's popular to talk him down. He's not flash but he's a good player and, if he can settle at winger, he's definitely good enough for our starting side. He showed his quality in the S15 semi final.

Hopefully, Meyer wants to bed in a new full back from the outset and he comes to Ireland a week or two early, fully fit and hungry for games. We're short for established back three players at the moment and the sooner he gets here, the better.

Well he's actually completely untested as a winger so yes Luke, Ferg and Dave K would be ahead of him. And a fully fit Rob Kearney is a far better player at full back.

Maybe this guy can bring something to the table that he hasn't shown before but I'm not going to fake some excitement over his arrival.
