Not sure why they would be signing a rookie scrum half: thought Doak looked to have lots of potential last season, and I've always been a fan of Cooney.
They need a loosehead prop and a flanker.
Cooney may well be off next summer, signed this guy on 1 year deal to see if he is any good etc.
Yeah, an Ulster friend of mine said that and it makes sense.
He clearly isn’t in Ireland’s plans, so he may as well make some money in France.
I really never understood why he never got a fair shot, but even more so now: he seems perfectly suited to this Ireland style of heads-up decision-making rugby.
Must have really taken a stinky poo in Johnny’s cornflakes at some point.

Someone told me Dundalk was once part of Ulster, so maybe not another poach from Leinster.

Quite the Yacht Rock connoisseur you are, John. I too have a soft spot for all those bands you referenced, having grown up with them in my teens.Even saw the Doobies on the '82 Farewell Tour with Michael McDonald and Tom Johnston at the Meadowlands in NJ. Great gig. For bringing back the memories I give you the following:

Not a fan of that term (which I believe was only invented about 15 years ago) or a lot of the music that goes under it. Pretty much most of it after 1980 was muck. Or at least not as good.

Loved Mickey Mac and the Dobies though. And of course the much misunderstood Dan.

I hate the term too, as I regard it as exclusively applicable to the godawful Jimmy Buffett. Pity Jeff Skunk Baxter turned into a Reaganite Star Wars nut. He played geetar with the Dans and the Bros for a while.

Brent Pope on Off The Ball yesterday, claiming he heard Will Connors is off to Ulster. Didn't sound very believable...but this is rumour mill.

Whatever about this specific rumour, it does feel inevitable we will lose someone from Deegan, Penny and Connors.

We have a stack of relatively young talent in that area, Deegan and Connor’s injury profiles aren’t great so wouldn’t be surprised if one of them is being moved on.

Of those, Connors has shown he can perform to the highest level. But possibly also has the worst injury profile. And is purely a specialist 7.
He was excellent 2020-21 though, so would be a real shame to lose him.

Penny and Deegan cover more positions, and are less injured.

Penny has already said recently, that he thinks Leinster is the best place for him to develop. Which of course it is. Max is just about to overtake Conan, so it would be a massive shame to lose him.

This rumour comes every year. Seems a bit tired this time around.

There isn't really a strong case for any of them moving. Deegan is riding high and plays a game so suited to Leinster. Ulster and Munster have very popular 8s (& different) already in situ.

There are a lot of 7s around at other provinces so Penny doesn't have much upside to trying to move.

Connors has been injured anyway. It's not like he's not getting picked.

Baird playing more at 6 has tightened things slightly. But that would be affecting Soroka to me.

Leavy retiring and Josh Murphy leaving was enough, I think.

I feel that we will probably lose someone.

I'm not sure who. Im not sure whose contract is expiring.

I could see the older veterans (Ruddock/Conan) commanding a big salary abroad and I'm not sure matching it would be in Leinsters interest.

In which case negotiations would go like this

Ruddock: I've an offer for 300k a year for 3 years in France.
Leinster: Take it. Go in peace and know that we love you.

I could also see any of the younger group who are outside the first choice 15 being tempted (Connors, Deegan, Penney).

What exactly is the depth chart here (including academy)? I think it's something like this (as far as I remember both Culhane and O'Brien play #8 ):

Blindside Flanker
Doris
Baird
Ruddock
Moloney
Soroka

Openside Flanker
van der Flier
Penny
Connors

Number 8
Conan
Deegan
O'Brien
Culhane

Obviously we've seen Doris at 8 a fair bit, but has played most of his Leinster rugby at 6 over the past 1.5 seasons. Looking at that list, losing Connors would actually leave us very light at openside, assuming I'm correct in thinking none of the current academy lads play there.

Moloney/SOB have both played 7 and could do so at senior level.

Jackman saying he had heard that Leinster are looking at replacing Lancaster with a defence coach and giving Goodman more responsibility.

Seemed to suggest defence coach he heard had already worked with Goodman and was in high demand.

Could be the way to go. I know it's early doors yet and that the proof of the pudding won't come till the business end of the season, but from what I can tell thus far Goodman would seem to be a more than adequate replacement for Felipe.

Tamati Ellison?
I’m not well up with SH coaches.

Mark Jones (ex Welsh winger) was coaching defence at the Crusaders at the same time as Goodman before taking a job at Worcester during covid. Presumably he has some connection to McBryde also and maybe Jackman got word through his Welsh connections. Pure speculation on my part!

She corrected the Leo/Stu part, thankfully not the Robertson part.
