Players' Weights
Some interesting new numbers from the updated squad pages:
Front Five:
Mike Ross: 127kg [19st 13lbs] [source: http://www.leinsterrugby.ie/profiles/in ... ef=dynamic] – he has been listed as low as 116kg [18st3lbs] up until recently [source: http://www.rbs6nations.com/en/ireland/1 ... ef=dynamic ]; that was always a bit of a white lie! +11kg
Jack McGrath: 122kg [19st2lbs], previously listed as 120kg [18st12lbs] +2kg
Sean Cronin: 101kg [15st12lbs], previously listed as 105kg [16st7lbs] [source: http://www.rbs6nations.com/en/1689.php? ... ef=dynamic ] -4kg
Damien Browne: 125kg [19st 9lbs] [source: http://www.leinsterrugby.ie/profiles/in ... ef=dynamic] - down 2kg from last season. Hopefully Big Browne's shoulder has healed up well and he has had a decent break over the last couple of months. His last game was against NGD on 5th May, 10 weeks ago. -2kg
Devin Toner: 211cm [6'11"] and 124kg [19st 7lbs] – up 1cm and 4kg from last season, the big fellah just keeps on getting bigger. A combined Browne/Toner second row now weighs in at 249kg +4kg
Mark Flanagan: 201cm [6'7"] and 112 kg [17st8lbs] [source: http://www.leinsterrugby.ie/profiles/in ... ef=dynamic ] – huge gains for the 22 year old second-rower; he was listed at 198cm [6'6"] and 105kg [16st7lbs] last season. Good news all around! Hopefully he can improve his hitting power; he's pretty fleet of foot for a second row, but you need to win your collisions. +7kg
Backrow:
Rhys Ruddock: 111kg [17st 6lbs] [source: http://www.leinsterrugby.ie/profiles/in ... ef=dynamic ] – listed at 103kg previously [source: http://www.rbs6nations.com/en/ireland/1 ... ef=dynamic ]. RR is a big dude. +8kg
Dom Ryan: 193cm [6'4"] and 106kg [16st 9lbs] [source: http://www.leinsterrugby.ie/profiles/in ... ef=dynamic ] – Ryan was listed as 191cm [6'3"] and 98kg [15st8lbs] last season, which always seemed surprisingly light to me. +8kg
Leo Auva'a: 127kg [19st 13lbs] [souce: http://www.leinsterrugby.ie/profiles/in ... ef=dynamic ] - up from 125kg last season. Hopefully the right sort of weight – Auva'a looks like a guy who gets big if he looks at weights OR at pies. +2kg
Halfbacks:
Isaac Boss: now listed at 88kg [13st12lbs], previously listed as 90kg [14st2lbs] -2kg
Eorin Reddan: now listed at 83kg [13st1lb], previously listed as 86kg [13st 8lbs] –3kg
Threequarters:
Bren Macken: 95kg [14st13lbs] - up 3kg from last year, previously listed as 92kg [14st6lbs] +3kg
Andrew Conway: 88kg [13st12lbs] - up 6kg from last year, previously listed as 82kg [12st12lbs] +6kg
Who knows if the lads are carrying a lot of change in their pockets or if they're using a heavy scale to measure them? The fact that some players have lost weight would suggest that it's not a big hoax to convince opposition teams that we've morphed into an enormous team over the summer. Some big gains though.

Re: Players' Weights
Clermont were a big team, the general trend in Leinster has been towards bigger players.
I also note that at Clermont they had a petite scrumhalf in Parra, so it all seems to fit.
For Cronin, I'd say that 4kgs of speed is worth more than 4kgs of hitting power. Stick with the electric pace.

Re: Players' Weights
they all seem like reasonable gains / losses for the players mentioned
Saturday 23rd May 2009 - Number 1
Saturday 21st May 2011 - Brace
Saturday 19th May 2012 - Hatrick!

Re: Players' Weights
Didn't realise Dominic Ryan was that tall. Is he fit for the start of the season? Should be plenty of gametime for him.

There's no way he's that tall.Danthefan wrote:Didn't realise Dominic Ryan was that tall. Is he fit for the start of the season? Should be plenty of gametime for him.

People don't grow an inch between the age of 21 and 22. Possibly down to measuring at different times of the day (you are taller in the morning) and slight errors of judgement in both directions.

Re: Players' Weights
Cronin definitely needed to shed a few pounds. Although he's obviously very swift for a hooker, he was definitely carrying a fair amount of bodyfat:-
Let's hope he's even more dynamic at his new weight.

Re: Players' Weights
I've seen Ryan measured at 192cm before [source: http://eng.jwc2009.jp/player/profile/20 ... 54212.html ] never 193cm. As TR says, there are variables such as time of day. You've got 24 articulating vertebrae in your spine, and giving the natural of the intervertebral discs – i.e. the material they're composed of and how they perform – it's not implausible that they compress [in total] by 1cm over the course of a day ... especially if you're doing max effort squats!totalrandomer wrote:People don't grow an inch between the age of 21 and 22. The much more questionable/encouraging one is Mark Flanagan sprouting to 201cm – wouldn't put it past him with those Toner genes! Flanagan looks like a smashing athlete but doesn't have a huge heap of rugby behind him [source: http://dementedmole.com/2012/03/07/brad ... -leinster/ ] and to my mind is only ever going to be a loosehead scrummaging/middle-jumping No5 while he's in his 20s. With that said, he could form a very complementary [if very inexperienced] partnership with Quinn Roux in the second half of some Pro12 games.
Re: Players' Weights
I would say Dom Ryan is certainly 6'3" anyway. I've stood alongside him and he's definitely taller than me and I'm over 6ft. He packed down at lock previously for the Irish U20 side in the JWC alongside Flanagan, keeping DOC2 out of the side.

I think his athleticism and gait make it appear that he's smaller than he actually is. You don't generally expect someone to be that tall and able to move so quickly and have such agility.

Good news that, hope the bulk(pardon the pun) of it is in his thighs.

Serious stats for Ruddock, this lad simply has to kick on this season tho' I wonder has he gained weight from not training after the operation, the wrong way.

A leaner Auva'a would be preferable as he's a b g strong boy regardless. Felt he was carrying to much pudge around his midrift last season, similar shape to Cacau. A serious athlete if he gets his weight down slightly.

Re: Players' Weights
Leo was in great shape last season. Did you see him when he played for Belvo? Belly the size of a small country. I though he looked fit and sharp last year.
Re: Players' Weights
In the interests of fairness people commenting should see where they fall on the global fatness scale. I am apparently of Croatian proportions with a BMI greater than 95% of the global population (in my age range) I therefore choose to withhold my opinion on the largeness of the Leinster panel.

I'm Ethiopian according to that. Now ok I've the build of a marathon runner rather than a rugby player - but seriously, a famine ridden country??domhnallj wrote:In the interests of fairness people commenting should see where they fall on the global fatness scale. Re: Players' Weights
But you're not a professional athlete! Although a significant percentage of baseball players carry some pudge and its not like all American football players are skinny dainty little guys.domhnallj wrote:In the interests of fairness people commenting should see where they fall on the global fatness scale. I'm apparently Swedish (although I'm definitely fatter than most Swedes I've seen in the movies) and thinner than 75% of my fellow Americans (I'm guessing the other 25% are immigrants)!
Re: Players' Weights
My BMI is higher than 100% of males in my country and around the world (BMI 33). I got Micronesia, the world's fattest country. 192 cm and 120 kg...oh dear.
In relation to the player heights, your body height can change by up to 2cm between morning and night. The taller and heavier you are, the greater the effect (it's based on compression of the fluid in between your vertebrae via the gravity and the weight of your head).
Good to see the lads coming along well physically.

Either you're reading it wrong or their scale is messed up, you just said you were the fattest man on the planet.neiliog93 wrote:My BMI is higher than 100% of males in my country and around the world (BMI 33). I got Micronesia, the world's fattest country. 192 cm and 120 kg...oh dear.

Re: Players' Weights
It's based on averages. A BMI of 33 is high but there's higher, much higher.

I tried to enter my details but got a funny dial tone and it just said "you're too fat to dial the numbers, to order a dialing wand, please mash the keypad..."
Can I raise a practical question at this point? Are we gonna do "Stonehenge" tomorrow?
