Re: A whiff of Cordite
Quinlan's over use of his hands is really annoying. I wonder does he actually communicate like that or is he just trying way too hard to be insightful?
Sheehan is a muppet. Again, he uses his hands way too much. He looks totally out of place in front of the tv. He's cheating a living from "punditry"
Forgotten the name of the former Leinster and munster prop..Mark something. haven't seen him in a while .Another tit on tv. He lectures people like Golfman does here and, to a lesser extent, Austin Healy . Instead of informing these three lecture their audience on what is happening. Mark looks like he thinks he has something interesting to say but really is a windbag.

Re: A whiff of Cordite
aside from the obvious conflict of interest, Frankie commentates like hes watching a primary school sportsday
Quinny brings some much needed aggression to punditry
Shag Horgan should get punditry sainthood if for no other reason than the first thing he more or less did was own George Hook over the new Ireland jerseys in the Boks match

Mark McDermott. Actually thought he was brilliant when he first came on TV after he was the under 20s coach but he's been awful ever since. He just states the obvious like a football pundit and RTE don't help by cutting to him well after the incident happened and generally when something important is about to happen.

If he stopped shouting everything he says it would be a start.

Mark Macs-interruptions have now become an art on statin the bleedin obvious.
NFrancis is painful to watch( and listen too) it can take him an age to say anything.
Shaggy is excellent but maybe to much info for the ave fan who only turns up for the national games.
Frankie is OK when he is not promoting one of his own players.
Emmet is excellent on the dark arts of the scrum, but again a specialist.
Popey is dead wood at this stage and inextricably linked to Corks no.1 citizen.
Jackman is OK but needs to stop the deep intake of breath that he has before answering every single question.
OShea is excellent, or at least I thought he was. Now I realise that that was simply because he was sitting beside abbot&costello (ask your da) and couldn't possibly balls it up from there.
Wood, not bad but can we all chip in and buy him a new adjective? "Unbelievable/Unbelievably" wore out 5 years ago.
others, not on long enough to be rated.

It's the Sky Effect™ To motion more with your hands, and use less substance verbally. Quinny has been tamed, which leaves him bland enough, unfortunately. Very unfortunately. His RTÉ work shouldn't have been affected, but it was. He was always a lot more insightful (in terms of analysis) earlier on in his media career. His writing is still pretty decent (accepting the fact that he's there as an ex-Munster player).suisse wrote:Quinlan's over use of his hands is really annoying. Horgan just can't shut up. That's my only criticism of him. I don't mind the names thing (although I'd prefer it if that was corrected by himself / producer / host). His analysis always brings something new to the table. I.e. there's always some point when I think "Jaysus, you're right Shaggy, I didn't notice that", which is great. He's not for the casual viewer, though, as he's way too technical. He forms a vital part of an analysis team, though. Paired with more polished, and noob-friendly (like O'Shea, or even Popey), and it's hard to beat.

Having read Fergie's shambolic autobiography I really hope more time is taken with this, a change of writer has me sceptical though.simonno6 wrote:Paul Kimmage will now not write BOD's book, The Limerick Leader's Alan English is taking over.

Wonder what happened? Did Bod get sick of Kimmage fixating on him drinking a cup of tea or something and wondering if that was an indication of self doubt which instilled a determination to win at everything he does?

I stopped reading his newspaper stuff years ago. Often found myself bored rigid before the end of the first paragraph.

I read the Matt Hampson book, I thought it was decent enough. I read it because I wanted to find out more about the life of a rugby player who appeared to have everything going for him and how he dealt with becoming a quadriplegic. I did get some of this but I also got a lot of Paul Kimmage dealing with writing a book about a quadreplegic former rugby player. He actually had nearly more acknowledgements and shout outs then Hampson himself. I found it a all a bit strange. BOD has an absolute brilliant story to tell and I want to read about his story, not how a 'ghost writer' feels about writing the book of such a legend. So the change for me may very well be a good thing.

Re: A whiff of Cordite
Yeah I was the same OTT. It was still a brilliant book but I just don't like his style. Whenever he talks a out cycling he seems to say that he doesn't want to be known as some kind of hero who helped expose the drugs and clean it up....but then keeps mentioning how he exposed the drugs and helped clean it up. In fairness he's pretty good overall and there's a documentary about the Armstrong thing coming out that looks brilliant. Actually I was even going to contribute to his defence fund before Lance admitted everything.

I couldn't agree less. Devastated that Kimmage is not writing it. Finally thought we'd find out about Bod the man. Now we get Alan English, who refused to publish the names of men using prostitutes in Limerick, which goes against the basic principal of court reporting. He will finish the book while editing the Limerick Leader, which goes to print three times a week and a result we will may likely get a bog standard autobiography that will be instantly forgotten.

Drico did a short stint for SKY a few years ago and was master class. Demonstrated the same type of analytical ability that Horgan does.fourthirtythree wrote:I enjoy all of Shaggy, O'Gara, Jackman, O'Shea (less - as I think his punditry can be compromised and interested), Emmet Byrne, and Flannery. I was a fan of Quinlan but less so as he's gone on and become more similar to the rest.
I watch Ireland matches on the BBC though. And all of the 6N in fact. Quite a few P45s to be handed out before I revert to our national broadcaster.
Of the Munster pundits Flannery and ROG are way ahead of their stablemates.
Frankie and Ward are actually worse than Hook and that's a statement in itself. O'Shea is too political.
I'm looking forward to Pope's resurrection now that we have a coach who Popey will "get" totally.

As I'm not a casual viewer and I pay a TV license fee too, give me more of Horgan and get rid of Hook altogether. Pope then might decide that the joke shop has closed and he can contribute again.meinster wrote:It's the Sky Effect™ To motion more with your hands, and use less substance verbally. What makes you think that BOD's autobiography would be that compelling anyway?Isaac4leinster wrote:I couldn't agree less. Devastated that Kimmage is not writing it. He's already covered the Lions in NZ thing in far, far too much detail on the tour diary book.
