Johan Cryff- RIP

Post by artaneboy »

One of the legends of my youth has passed on far too early. Probably the best player of the round ball I ever saw- YouTube him.

Remember he led that fantastic Dutch team to the World Cup Final in '74. Should have won that too- but won much more than a trophy in the end. He was one of the greatest influences on football- and other sports, of his time.

Sad day....

Indeed. A sublime player and the Dutch concept of Total football was wonderful to watch. RIP

One of the greatest players of all time and, perhaps unlike Pele and Maradona, his influence off the pitch was as great as his influence on.

That's certainly true. It's probably his real enduring legacy. It'll endure beyond grainy TV clips and middle-aged men's stories....

For you kids out there who wonder what is all the fuss about this Cruyff fella. One word. Barcelona.
You know I'm going to lose,
And gambling's for fools,
But that's the way I like it baby, I don't want to live FOREVER!

And in some ways the Catalan independence movement owes Cruyff a debt as well. He is Barca's Bill Shankly, though even more important because he was first their star player and a very staunch "Catalan". His fingerprints are still all over the club.
