Re: Punch Drunk - the boxing thread
Jason Quigley secures Ireland's first medal with a 3-0 win.
Quigley has become only the 7th Irish male boxer to win a medal at the World Championships. The previous seven medals were all bronze:
1982 Tom Corr (71KG)
1989 Michael Carruth (63.5KG)
1993 Damean Kelly (51KG)
1995 Stephen Kirk (81KG
2001 James Moore (67KG)
2009 & 2001 John Joe Nevin (56KG)
in 2001 Ireland had 6 boxers in the quarter finals and still only came home with one bronze.
Still to come today are:
91KG Tommy McCarthy v Yamil Peralta (2) (Argentina) @ 11.30am
52KG Paddy Barnes (5) v Jasurbek Latipov (4) (Uzbekistan) @ 2.15pm
81KG Joe Ward (6) v Nikita Ivanov (3) (Russia) @ 3.30pm

Paddy Barnes loses out but Joe Ward wins 3-0 and makes this Ireland's most successful World Championships. 2 medals guaranteed, just the colour to be decided.

Re: Punch Drunk - the boxing thread
Jason Quigley beats Artem Chebotarev of Russia, despite a joke of a standing count in the 2nd round, to become Ireland's first male World Championship finalist. He will face the Kazakh fighter Zhanibek Alimkhanuly in the final after England's Anthony Fowler was pulled from the semi with a hand injury.
Still to come today Joe Ward faces Julio De La Cruz Peraza of Cuba.

Re: Punch Drunk - the boxing thread
Joe has to settle for bronze. The Cuban was unreal. You can't beat what you can't hit and Joe just couldn't trap him.
That said, a World bronze at 19 is something to be proud of and he'll definitely be one to watch for Rio.

Will he have any chance against the Kazakh?Broken Wing wrote:Jason Quigley beats Artem Chebotarev of Russia, despite a joke of a standing count in the 2nd round, to become Ireland's first male World Championship finalist. Re: Punch Drunk - the boxing thread
Every chance. The guy he beat was highly favoured and Jason just outfought him. The last round was a real slugfest with the Russian desperate to win the judges over. The Kazakh he'll face would have been pushed to get past Fowler but the extra day's rest might just stand to him.
Of course the Kazakh's have done "surprisingly" well in their home tournament. They've made the final at 49Kg, 64Kg, 69Kg, 75Kg, 81Kg and +91Kg. Were beating in the semi final at 56Kg and 60Kg and at the quarter final at 52Kg. Only at 91Kg did they fail to progress as far as a quarter final.
Quigley's final is live on RTÉ One at 10.50am tomorrow.

Re: Punch Drunk - the boxing thread
Quigley fought well but took an 8 count in the first round and just couldn't make up the ground so the Asian champion finishes as World champion and the European champion becomes the first Irishman to win Silver at the World Championships.
The Cuban that beat Joe Ward went on to win gold.
2 medals was the stated target and 2 medals were brought home making it Ireland's most successful World Championships ever.

fair point they proably earn more than most journey men pros do,
How long before we see a tennis type scenario with pros boxing in the olympics? that would be the final straw for me

Unfortunately it is a move towards allowing pros box in the Olympics.JB1973 wrote:Peg Leg wrote:Odd one, but then they're hardly amateur boxers anymore?JB1973 wrote:Haye Legitimate injury or has his bottle gone?

The WSB is professional boxing in all but name and the winners at individual weights earn spots in the Olympics but AIBA is setting up a professional competition, the APB (AIBA Pro Boxing), under their banner which will allow professionals box while nominally being amateur and qualifying for the Olympics. The removal of head guards and the return of the 10-9 must scoring is just another step along the way.
AIBA wrote:APB will open up new horizons for boxers seeking to pursue their dreams as pros, within a transparent competition structure. For the first time, professional boxers can plan and track their career – backed fully by AIBA – and look forward to consistent support from their National Federations in return.

Awful stoppage especially in a world title fight and especially when he was so far up on 2 of the judges cards, have to say maybe a more experienced fighter would have taken a knee?
not as bas as this one mind!

John Joe Nevin had his first professional fight last night in Boston. He faced unbeaten Puerto Rican Albert Candelaria (3(2)-0-1) over six rounds and won by unanimous decision with all three judges scoring it 59-55.

Re: Punch Drunk - the boxing thread
how far do you see him going? he looks a big talent but he is in and around some incredibly difficult weight classes.
Re: Punch Drunk - the boxing thread
nevin has got two broken legs in an attack? not a great start to his pro career is it, suggests to me a move to the states maybe the best thing for him

Re: Punch Drunk - the boxing thread
There are so many versions of the story about what happened that it's not worth getting in to. Hard to disagree that a move away would be in his best interests though. His management are still talking about having him 6-0 by Christmas but I can't see how that's going to happen.

Well done Andy Lee. Doing Ireland and Limerick proud! Unbelievable left hook, but the follow up 17 unanswered shots on the button are what did it for him.
Loved his valedictory speech afterwards: "Up the Irish!" Fcukin Don!
