He just couldn't match Ward's strength. Ward knew it too. He spent a lot of the first round leaning on Ken and mouthing in his ear. Ward just seemed completely relaxed and in control from the start. Egan was right to go and deserved to do so in front of a packed stadium.

I felt a bit sorry for Katie. The IABA wanted to try and recreate the atmosphere from the Excel (and cash in on it) but that was the Olympics. A huge portion of the crowd were there purely for the occasion. Elite finals night in the stadium is a crowd there to support their own local boxers. Her fight was an exhibition while every other fight on the night was for a title. Just as the Irish soccer team can draw hordes to Poland for the Euros but are outsold by the Poles for a home friendly there was no way a tacked on exhibition on a night which was a final for every other boxer there was going to draw the sort of over enthusiastic cheering that Katie experienced in London.

David Price, reigning British heavyweight champion, suffered his 1st professional loss last night when he was knocked out in the second round by an embarrasingly overweight 41 year old American (with a decent record it has to be said, 40 fights and just 3 losses, 2 of them to Wlad Klitschko) in what was supposed to be just another step towards a title fight.

On the same night (Fr)Audley Harrison won the international heavyweight prizefighter making for a very unusual night for British boxing.

I'm not sure the fight is a good idea but he has repeatedly said it's not a comeback. It's just a fight that should have happened but never did. Hope it works out for him. I have very happy memories of his fights with Eubank.

The EUBC Men's European Championships are underway in Minsk at the moment. Ireland sent a full team and this is the story so far:

49 Kg P Barnes beat JA Williams (WAL) 3:0
52Kg M Conlan Beat N Abgaryan (ARM) 3:0
56Kg JJ Nevin Beat S Exer (TUR) 3:0
60Kg S McComb Lost to P Ischenko (UKR) 3:0
64Kg R Moylette Lost to H Karslioglu (TUR) 0:3
69Kg A Nolan Beat T Kot (POL) 3:0, Lost to B Shelestyuk (UKR) 0:3
75Kg J Quigley Beat A Chakaev (AUS) 3:0
81Kg J Ward Lost to M Tryc (POL) TKO (Ward was ahead on all cards but suffered a dislocated kneecap and had to retire in the 3rd round.)
91Kg T McCarthy Beat T Honka (FIN) 3:0
+91Kg C Sheehan Lost to M Bakhtidze (GEO) 1:2

Scoring is the traditional 10:9 method so 3:0 means it was a unanimous decision among all 3 judges and 2:1 is a split decision.

There are five Irish boxers left with the quarter finals taking place today. A win today guarantees at least a bronze.
49Kg P Barnes V I Ungvari (HUN)
52Kg M Conlan v S Loban (BEL)
56Kg JJ Nevin V K Nagy (HUN)
75Kg J Quigley V S Haertel (GER)
91Kg T McCarthy V T Mammadou (AZE)

John Joe Nevin wins 3:0. Nevin now has at least a European Bronze to add to an Olympic Silver, 2 World Bronzes, and an EU Gold and Silver making him the first Irishman to medal in all 4 majors.

Katie Taylor, of course, was the first Irish boxer to medal in all 4 majors winning gold in the Olympics, the World (4), the EU (4) and the European (5).

Paddy Barnes made short work of Alizada (AZE) to change his bronze for at least a silver medal. (3:0)

Paddy will face Ayrapetyan (RUS) in the final which is a meeting of the 1 and 2 seeds. (Ayrapetyan is the number 1 seed.)

John Joe Nevin joins Paddy in the semis after a 2:1 win over Russia's Nikitin which he made look so simple he had time to throw in a Mullingar shuffle in the final round (which is probably why he missed out on a 3:0).

Jason Quigley is in the ring around 1.30 and Mick "the baby faced assassin" Conlan at 5.15. The fights are live on RTÉNewsNow or on RTÉ.ie but unfortunately you have to put up with the distraction of Jimmy Magee's meandering nonsense about the Melbourne Olympics and boxers in the 40's.

Two Golds and two silvers is an excellent return. Nevin's fight was a stroll but that kid Quigley showed real heart and no little skill.

Amazing return from the whole Team .

Gutted for Paddy Barnes with his fractured nose - credit where it is due he fractured it in his first fight.

Cant help but feel that the administrators of Irish Boxing should be moved up to the IOC or some National Body.

It's not the administrators that should get the credit. It's the high performance unit - Joe Hennigan, Billy Walsh, Zuar Antia, Eddie Bolger and John Cleary, Conor McCarthy and Gerry Hussey - that are working with the elite boxers that deserve the credit. The nonsense around Billy Walsh's contract after London and the way they treated Pete and Katie Taylor around the Women's European Championhips highlighted just how amateur the administrators of the IABA truly are.

Ireland finished second in the European Championships. That's a stunning performance.

Next up for the amateurs is the Women's EU Boxing Championships in Hungary starting July 2nd and then the men's world championships in October in Kazakhstan.
