Even then, why not 8 pools of 3 home and away, top two qualify, round of 16, QF, SF, F = 8 matches (and only 4 "must play"matches)?

7,967 -the lowest attendance in the last 10 years and only the 3rd time under 10K in those 10 years. Still though, the highest attendance of the weekend. North and South stands being closed for health and safety reasons due to storm may have had some small influence on attendance level. Sent from m...

Re: RWC 2019 Warmup Games

No. Can’t see why AKI is the only player to start all 4 games when Ringrose and Farrell have been for throughout the period. A poor decision maker, particularly in defence. Ringer and Henshaw don’t play together nearly enough due to injuries, yet have the potential to be a world class combination. ...

Thanks @ormond lad. At least it's clear that Matt Williams follows these threads. His solutions are a bit wooly, even if well intentioned. Personally, I believe that there's not a lot wrong with the AIL structure and standard. But rather than see wholesale change I'd like to see Provincial / Nation...

Yeah, the paradox arises from that statement. Life developed very quickly here, it should have done so closer to the centre of the universe, ergo other civilisations should have come and gone and we should be picking up signs of their existence even if they are extinct. This planet emits radio wave...

Re: Anguished English Media is Comedy Gold

Schadenfreude doesn't get much schadenfreudier than seeing England lose repeatedly while led by Eddie Jones.

But if they lose a couple more, am I the only one who's really worried about a scenario where the RFU fire Eddie Jones and then poach Andy Farrell from us to replace him?

Re: Pro 14 - General Thread

The move to premier/Eir sports looks like a great move for the league. It's a big boost in money but it also means the league will start to feel more joined up and less fractured. We'll now be able to see different matches in different countries and there'll be a proper highlights and magazine show...

It's very different coming on at wing as part of a backline reshuffle following an unexpected injury substitution, and coming on as a direct unenforced replacement in position at fullback

Re: Ulster 2017 - 2018

A long, at times self indulgent read. Not much in the way of new info, we all know that Humps brought in more NIQ players than are allowed with money he somehow managed to wrangle out of the IRFU, of course there was sort lived success with the purchase of 6 quality to high quality players. And aga...

Re: RWC 2023: Ireland

I'm still struggling with the idea of the recommendation and the vote. If WR want a transparent process then everyone will have to vote for the recommendation otherwise the voting will obviously be dodgy. You would really need some of the voters to present serious reservations about how the technic...

Re: RWC 2023: Ireland

Is the strategy from here not to play a long game for 2027? Give our support to South Africa, hardly mention the ways in which we've been hard done by here, then extract support for us going again in four years' time, by which stage there should be real progress on some of the infrastructure stuff?

For the first time in more than 18 months, I agree with Comiskey / I Times analysis. Terrible coaching, great heart from Irish pack. Some Irish players (backs) not up to necessary skill level for World Cup challengers but overall just a very poor coaching effort with no innovation or clever use of ...

Not necessarily that IRFU want him back after one great season as he has had doesn't make him top priority all of a sudden. More relevant is that provinces signings need to be Irish qualified I'm slightly surprised not to have heard yet of any Keltic Kiwis on their way to any of the provinces... Ma...

GARC to 'help' rugby in North America with its contractual difficulties by either buying out the contracts at a vastly reduced rate or helping fund USA Rugby and Rugby Canada until the contracts expire

BT and Premiership Rugby became aware of these plans and instructed Prem to open negotiations for a B and I league - however some Prem owners (Bruce Craig foremost among them) would only accept it starting with the currrent Pro12 as Prem Div 2. The Pro12 said no.

BT not pleased. Prem coverage has not been successful for them - ironically, like Sky their best audiences are in Ireland for ECC games - so they've decided to reduce their Premiership spend quite considerably and concentrate on Europe which they will take from Sky entirely.
Really informative post, many thanks.
The Premium Div 2 thing is extraordinary arrogance from those owners - I guess it's unsurprising but it's an appallingly shortsighted and unconstructive attitude
To be brutally honest does the league really want to be associated with some of the Premiership owners club, there are some serious self serving w&%kers stuck up thir own arses with self importance in that lot.
They're like WC Fields - when his butler told him there was someone at the door asking to see him, Fields said: "Give him an evasive answer. Tell him to go f%~k himself."

Only not funny.
