At this time of year the Pro12 is inevitably over-shadowed by the Six Nations championship, especially when Ireland are going well. However the points earned at this time of year still count exactly the same when they're totted up at the end of the season. Last season, after a stuttering first half of the season in the league, Leinster used the four-game period around the Six Nations to drastically improve their league position.

And we're back!

Leinster return to action in Italy this Sunday, after three weeks off. As with their last visit to Italy in November, this game will be massively overshadowed by international action. That time Leinster were in Treviso quietly winning while Ireland lost heart-breakingly to New Zealand. At least this time the games aren't directly clashing with Ireland playing Wales on Saturday afternoon.

After two fairly dismal performances in a row they turned up in an angry humour versus Ulster and took them apart. They brought a real physical edge to everything they did and really should have won by a larger margin. When the teams were named Ulster seemed to have the stronger hand, but the men from the North never looked as if they believed they could win. True, Leinster should have put more scores on the board, especially in the first half when they dominated possession and territory but it was still a massive improvement on what had gone before and the win put Leinster back into second place in the table.

Leinster Rugby vs Ulster Rugby

After eight wins on the trot, it's now two defeats in a row for Leinster after they were beaten in a rain soaked game in Edinburgh last time out. The conditions were appalling but sadly so was Leinster's performance in a game that will want to be forgotten as quickly as possible by anyone unfortunate enough to witness it. Edinburgh deserved their win but coach Matt O'Connor would have given his players a fierce ear-bashing after the game.
