Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Benetton Treviso

by Jim O'Connor, 2015-05-07

Leinster's defeat to Ulster two weeks ago ended their chances of making the top four for the play-offs. After contesting five finals in a row, it's a pretty big drop-off for Leinster to be totally out of contention with two weeks of regular games remaining. Leinster would have been in a mood to kick back, throw in the (mostly ignored) kids from the academy for the last two games, open a bottle of whiskey and do their best to forget this wretched season.

So Leinster put in a brave, yet ultimately doomed performance last week, in losing to Toulon in the semi-final of Champions Cup. They were largely written off beforehand so their performance in bringing Toulon to extra time brought much praise from the media and (slightly worryingly) from the Leinster coaches and players themselves. With the winning mentality the Leinster players so often talk about, I didn't think they did "moral victories", but apparently they do now.

Leinster just about managed to beat Bath to reach the semi-finals of the Champions Cup last weekend. After a strong if workmanlike first half, they did their best to lose it in the second but just about hung in there at the end. So it was another great Six Nations Championship for Ireland, but sadly the same can't be said for Leinster. Their defeat away to the Scarlets meant it was the worst return in terms of points during the Championship period for many years. It has left Leinster two points outside the top four with only five games left.

The period during the Six Nations is a strange time for the Pro12. Obviously it gets less attention than normal, particularly in weekends when there are direct clashes with Six Nations games. However it can also be a very valuable time in that teams with good squad depth can take advantage and rack up a lot of wins. Since the Italians teams entered the league back in 2010, there has been four matches played during the Six Nations timespan. Generally Leinster have done well in this period and in the last two seasons they’ve won four from four. But this season will be their worst return from this period in terms of wins, regardless of what happens tomorrow.
