Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Munster Rugby

by Jim O'Connor, 2016-10-14

There seems to have been a concerted effort in the media to put a bit of spite back into this fixture in the build-up to Saturday. Maybe it's the fact the game has been moved to the sterile environs of the Aviva, but there's definitely been a lack of bite and bitterness to it over the last few seasons. So we've had winsome recollections of the days when the fixture was defined by brutal shoeings, vicious rucks and off the ball incidents. Of course, none of this is ancient history.

Leinster finally got a win in Scotland last week, but typically, they had to make life hard for themselves. After a slow start, they ripped into a fairly poor Edinburgh team and had the four try bonus point secured before half-time. Unfortunately they took that as a sign to knock off for the evening and they were awful in the second half, letting Edinburgh close to within six points of them. They finally raised themselves to finish the game off when the excellent Dan Leavy scored his second try of the night with the final play of the game, but the players will have had a flea in their ear all week from the coaching staff.

By dint of some strange Pro12 scheduling Leinster face into their second match in six days in Scotland tomorrow evening. It's fair to say Scotland hasn't been a happy hunting ground of late for Leinster with only one win in their last eight visits (if you count the Pro12 final hosted in Murrayfield). Last week's defeat to the Warriors was particularly annoying as it looked so promising at one point. Leinster had taken a 10 point lead well into the second half and Glasgow were looking frustrated by Leinster's defence but then Tommy Seymour showed his supreme poaching skills to turn the game on it's head with two tries from Leinster errors in two minutes. Leinster still should have taken something from the game, but the composure they showed earlier in the match was now gone and they rushed things at the end.

Leinster began their season last week with a less comfortable than expected win over Treviso. A positive start saw Joey Carbery finish off some good general play but then things got a little sloppy and Carbery's brilliant second try actually came against the run of play. At 15-0 up Leinster looked a surefire bet for a bonus point win but under new coach Kieran Crowley, Treviso showed a little more steel than usual. They fought their way back into the game and were within a score of Leinster until James Tracy's try from an excellent maul settled nerves seven minutes from time. The acclaim around Carbery's excellent individual performance on his first start at out-half somewhat obscured an error strewn Leinster performance, particularly at the set-piece.

Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Benetton Treviso

It's been a tough summer for Leinster. They finished last season with a defeat in the Pro12 final in Edinburgh. Losing to an excellent Connacht team was no disgrace, but the limp performance will have rankled with them. The optimism generated by the semi-final win over Ulster disappeared as Connacht stretched Leinster with some excellent attacking rugby. Once Leinster couldn't dominate up front, they really had no other plan and in truth the style of Connacht's win was good for both the League and Irish rugby.
