While it was the league leaders who took on the defending champions in this Magners League game it was a barely recognisable Ospreys team that took to the field at the RDS. The Ospreys had one or perhaps both eyes on the following weeks Heineken Cup Round 5 tie with Gloucester. Leinster on the other hand knew that a win would put daylight between them and the chasing pack.

After the misery of the Heineken Cup defeat away to Edinburgh, Leinster regained some self-respect with a comprehensive defeat of Ulster on St. Stephen's Day. It was a tough, gritty performance in which the pack was dominant throughout. Despite the 29 point margin of victory and a defensive clean-sheet there was still some griping about the failure to earn a bonus point.
