Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Munster Rugby

by Jim O'Connor, 2011-11-07

If there's one thing to banish the blues of the World Cup and get the provincial juices flowing, it's Leinster v Munster at the Aviva Stadium. The late Friday night kick-off time will probably prevent it from being a complete sell-out but there still should be about around 46,000+ fans present. With the Heineken Cup starting next week, both teams will be looking to up their intensity and performance in this match.

Here's Jonny ! Leinster came away with a win from Murrayfield on Friday night despite losing the try count 2-3. Leinster needed Jonny Sexton to punish Edinburgh's indiscipline and Sexton, as often before, was not found wanting. It was the 60th minute and 5 for 5 before he missed a conversion. Sexton was sharp and assured throughout a high scoring match that was only won in the 71st minute when he struck a sweet drop goal.

So the World Cup is over for another four years. Well, at least this time we had a few nice moments before it all ended, once again, in soul-destroying disappointment. But that's enough of that for another four years and we can now get the season going properly.

By the time this match kicks off, we will already know the score of the Ireland - Wales quarter-final at the World Cup. No doubt it will affect the mood of the crowd at the RDS but good or bad both teams will have to put it out of their minds because they've serious business to attend to. With a three-week break in the league coming up for the final stages of the World Cup, this game will largely define the success or failure of the six-week 'mini-season' we've seen to date.

Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Aironi Rugby

There was a terrible beauty about Leinster's win in Llanelli last week.

Sure the game itself was ugly as sin, error-strewn and dominated by the referee's whistle but forget the aesthetic quality and think about the character shown by the Leinster team. With 24 players unavailable, they'd every excuse to go through the motions and lose a difficult away tie. Certainly no one would have blamed them for doing so. However they bonded together and fought like men possessed to eke out a tight win. In a young team, the senior pro's like Isa Nacewa, Damian Browne and Heinke van der Merwe really stood up to be counted. The man of the match though was Richardt Strauss, who effectively played two positions at once (hooker and open-side flanker) and won countless turnovers on the deck.
