Match Report: Cardiff Blues vs Leinster Rugby

by Sarah Lennon, 2007-05-15

Win or bust. That was the task facing Leinster as they arrived in Cardiff on a wet Friday. A bonus point win would seal it, but a win was vital to have hope of succeeding where they had come so close the previous year.

Cardiff provided a bleak welcome as it had been raining heavily for most of the day. Just before kick off however the clouds parted. A good omen? The next eighty minutes would reveal all.

So it all comes down to this. Leinster go to the Cardiff Arms Park tomorrow night knowing a bonus point win will guarantee them the Magners League title, regardless of what the Ospreys do the next day. If Leinster win without a bonus point they will be depending on the Borders pulling off a major shock by drawing with or beating the Ospreys. Of course the Ospreys have the advantage of knowing exactly what they'll have to do the next day. This is of course ridiculous. Back in 2004 and 2006, when the league came down to the last round of games, all the teams in contention were made to play their final games at the same time. This time however, the League's organisers have bowed to the wishes of the TV broadcasters, a decision that will do nothing for the credibility of the league.

Match Report: Leinster Rugby vs Border Reivers

by Sarah Lennon, 2007-05-08

Saturday night, was an evening of goodbyes. Leinster were playing their final match at Donnybrook before a move to the RDS for next season. Several playing staff were making their last home appearance and for some spectators it will be the last time they see a Leinster shirt on Will Green, Guy Easterby, Owen Finegan and Reggie Corrigan who added another cap to his record haul. It would also mark the final occasion the Leinster played Borders before the region was wound up. Those in attendance were hoping that on a night of goodbyes Leinster wouldn't bid farewell to their title aspirations too.

Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Border Reivers

Time to say goodbye.  This Saturday's match against the Borders will be the last at Donnybrook in its' present state.  There have been some great days there for Leinster, especially in the professional age.  There were the wins over Leicester in '97 and '99.  There was the defeat of Stade Francais in 2000 in front of a crowd of only three thousand because the kick-off was put at 5.30 to accommodate the Branch Christmas party!  There was also the 40-10 thumping of the mighty Toulouse in 2001.  There were sad days as well such as the defeat to Llanelli in 1999, which saw them miss out on qualification from the group.  Two years later, a 34-all draw against Edinburgh effectively saw them miss out on qualification again.  However, for all the good and the bad nights, the place never lost it's dilapidated charm.
