The Magners League Title Run-In

by Jim O'Connor, 2007-04-25

The Magners league format is a rarity in rugby these days in that there are no end of season play-offs to determine the champions.  It's a straight league format.  While traditionalists will insist that this is the best way of determining a league, it's major drawback is when one team romps away with it, there is no exciting finale.  Luckily for Magners/Celtic league though, this has only happened once in the four seasons of this format (in 2005 when the Ospreys ran away with it).  In 2004 and 2006, it went down to the wire on the last day of the season and it already looks like doing the same this year.

On the terrace, the singing and chanting in the build-up to the game was raucous. The stunned look on the faces of the Wasps fans suggested they had never seen anything like it. The singing continued through the first half when Leinster battled hard but were fortunate to be only 13-10 behind. At half-time we were quite confident that a typical Cheika bollocking would sort out Leinster and they would triumph, especially with the Wasps talisman Lawrence Dallaglio in the sin-bin for the first ten minutes of the second half. Victory would surely be ours......
