Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Connacht Rugby

by Jim O'Connor, 2016-10-28

Leinster took to the field in red t-shirts as a tribute to Anthony Foley last Sunday in Montpellier. Yet in a way, they made another tribute to him with a display that reminded you of Munster in their heyday. Often when Foley led Munster, they would go to France and be thoroughly out-played and yet somehow they'd come home with a valuable bonus point. Leinster played poorly and made a tonne of errors, but they showed guts to keep plugging away to first deny Montpellier a bonus point and then to snatch one themselves with the last play of the game that left them at the top of the pool table. Leo Cullen won't be happy with the performance but he will love the character shown.

So European rugby is back again and this year Leinster are a little more optimistic about their chances of progressing. Last season, they had a brute of a draw against Wasps, Toulon and Bath especially coming straight after a World Cup in which most of the squad had been involved. When they were unexpectedly stuffed in their first home match by Wasps, their campaign was effectively dead in the water. There was brief respite when a young side beat Bath at home, but that was as good as it got. It was Leinster's worst European performance ever and the squad will be determined to restore the dignity of the province this season.

There seems to have been a concerted effort in the media to put a bit of spite back into this fixture in the build-up to Saturday. Maybe it's the fact the game has been moved to the sterile environs of the Aviva, but there's definitely been a lack of bite and bitterness to it over the last few seasons. So we've had winsome recollections of the days when the fixture was defined by brutal shoeings, vicious rucks and off the ball incidents. Of course, none of this is ancient history.

Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Ospreys

Leinster finally got a win in Scotland last week, but typically, they had to make life hard for themselves. After a slow start, they ripped into a fairly poor Edinburgh team and had the four try bonus point secured before half-time. Unfortunately they took that as a sign to knock off for the evening and they were awful in the second half, letting Edinburgh close to within six points of them. They finally raised themselves to finish the game off when the excellent Dan Leavy scored his second try of the night with the final play of the game, but the players will have had a flea in their ear all week from the coaching staff.

Match Preview: Edinburgh Rugby vs Leinster Rugby

By dint of some strange Pro12 scheduling Leinster face into their second match in six days in Scotland tomorrow evening. It's fair to say Scotland hasn't been a happy hunting ground of late for Leinster with only one win in their last eight visits (if you count the Pro12 final hosted in Murrayfield). Last week's defeat to the Warriors was particularly annoying as it looked so promising at one point. Leinster had taken a 10 point lead well into the second half and Glasgow were looking frustrated by Leinster's defence but then Tommy Seymour showed his supreme poaching skills to turn the game on it's head with two tries from Leinster errors in two minutes. Leinster still should have taken something from the game, but the composure they showed earlier in the match was now gone and they rushed things at the end.
