Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Glasgow Warriors

by Jim O'Connor, 2011-05-05

What an occasion!

Last week Leinster and Toulouse took to the stage of the Aviva stadium like two grizzled old gladiators. They went to war for 80 minutes and when it was all over, the respect between the two teams was palpable and heart-warming. There was no whining from the Toulouse coach and players, just a tip of the hat from one great team to another. Toulouse had given it everything but the better team had won on the day and they were man enough to admit it rather than trying to deflect the blame onto the referee like certain English teams have done this season. Once again, Toulouse showed their class.

For the sixth time in their history, Leinster contest a Heineken Cup semi-final this Saturday. So far, their record in semi-finals is won one, lost four. Their opponents, Toulouse, are the aristocracy of Europe, with four Heineken Cups to their name. This is their tenth semi-final and so far they've won six and lost three. The last of those losing semi-finals was against Munster in Bordeaux eleven years ago. So, in their last five semi-finals they've won the lot, including last season's win over Leinster in Toulouse.

For the first time in four years, Leinster will play an away match and only those fans lucky enough to have made the trip over will see it. Leinster fans at home will be reduced to relying on updates from the Magners League website and the OLSC twitter feed. It will be an odd experience as in recent years we've become somewhat spoilt in having all our away matches televised. However the failure of Dahlia TV has left Italian rugby without a host broadcaster and there is no-one there to relay the pictures to RTE or TG4.

When the final whistle blew last Saturday, the feeling in the Aviva Stadium was more relief than euphoria. The quarter-final against Leicester was a game Leinster always looked like winning, but there was always a doubt in the mind of home supporters. That doubt was due to the try-scoring chances in the first half that were squandered. There was a horrible feeling throughout that blowing those chances would come back to haunt us. When the Tigers finally broke through with three minutes to go, it felt like that prophecy would come true.

Match Report: Leinster Rugby vs Leicester Tigers

by Patrick Fennelly, 2011-08-23

In the build up to last Saturday's clash against Leicester in the Heineken Cup semi-final the press was divided. After all, Leinster and Leicester have quite the history in this competition. In 2005 the Tiger's came to Dublin to take on a Leinster team very much in form, having made a clean sweep of their Heineken Cup Pool. However, the Leicestershire men, under Martin Johnson, were on a similar March through Europe, and proved just too classy for the boys in blue on the day.
