Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Wasps

by Jim O'Connor, 2018-12-14

Leinster start the defence of the Heineken Champions Cup in fine fettle.

They come in on the back of two excellent derby wins, overwhelming Connacht in Galway and then being able to rest several stars and still beat Munster at the Aviva Stadium last week. The short turnaround from that match was the reason the likes of Jonathan Sexton, Tadhg Furlong and the rest were given the day off and if Leinster win tomorrow too Leo Cullen will be feeling pretty pleased with himself.

Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Racing '92

by Jim O'Connor, 2018-05-11

Leinster are back in the top European final for the first time in six years.

When Leinster were last in the final demolishing Ulster in Twickenham, it's fair to say Leinster fans became almost nonchalant with the success and perhaps the players lost their hunger also. The following season they failed to even qualify from their pool. A quarter-final and a semi-final defeat against the same team in Toulon followed in the next two seasons. However such was the toxic nature of the Matt O'Connor regime, those respectable European performances couldn't save his job.

Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Scarlets

by Jim O'Connor, 2018-04-20

Let's hope it is just a lucky omen.

Before Leinster played Saracens in the quarter-final they warmed up with their worst performance of the season away to Ospreys. Last week they warmed up to play Scarlets in the semi-final with an even worse performance. Credit to Benetton, we said they were no longer anyone's mugs and they thoroughly deserved their win. They were smart, physical and well organised in defence but when they had the chance they played some good rugby too. Leinster's performance was marked by arrogance and complacency as they just seemed to think they had to turn up to win. Leinster's starting team is vastly different to the one that started last weekend but it's a great lesson to the squad to not take anything for granted.

Match Preview: Leinster Rugby vs Saracens

So it's finally here.

This is the game Leinster have been waiting for since they beat Montpellier in January.

Unfortunately Leinster chose to warm up with easily their worst performance of the season. It was only their third defeat of the season but in the other two defeats in Scotland, they could and probably should have won. In Swansea last week though the struggling Ospreys were miles the better team and they both out-muscled and out-played Leinster.

Match Preview: Montpellier Herault vs Leinster Rugby

by Jim O'Connor, 2018-01-19

It was a pretty sweet weekend of European rugby all round for Leinster.

Not only did they win comfortably on Sunday afternoon to win their pool but every other result across the other pools went their way too. The results meant they're now guaranteed a home quarter-final and they only need one point to be top seeds. Being first or second seeds now means a home semi-final provided you're playing one of the other top four seeds so it's definitely a prize worth attaining as they face a Montpellier side coming off a heavy defeat away to Exeter last week.
