So European rugby is back again and this year Leinster are a little more optimistic about their chances of progressing. Last season, they had a brute of a draw against Wasps, Toulon and Bath especially coming straight after a World Cup in which most of the squad had been involved. When they were unexpectedly stuffed in their first home match by Wasps, their campaign was effectively dead in the water. There was brief respite when a young side beat Bath at home, but that was as good as it got. It was Leinster's worst European performance ever and the squad will be determined to restore the dignity of the province this season.

There was an element of nervousness in both the crowd and the coaching staff before last week's game against Bath as "Cullen's Cubs" were sent out to do battle with the English Premiership finalists of last season. The nervousness proved to be completely unfounded as each one of the six players starting their first European game played with no fear.

Leinster faced Bath at the RDS already out of the European competition and with the English side needing a win to keep their hopes alive. Since the European defeats of earlier in the season Leinster's form has improved in the league and most Leinsterfans will have been excited to see the young team given their chance today. With the result immaterial to Leinster it was a chance for the younger players to gain valuable experience at this level and to show Leinsterfans that the future is bright.

After three league wins over the Christmas/New Year period, Leinster now have to complete their European fixtures. In competitive terms their two remaining games are meaningless as Leinster can't progress to the quarter-finals and they won't affect how Leinster are ranked in next year's tournament. However in more intangible terms, the games will still have meaning for Leinster and their players.

The Christmas game at the Aviva, Leinster's marquee fixture, will now be played in a bizarre atmosphere. The game has been described as a dead rubber, but of course that's only true for the home team. Toulon still badly need the points in what's becoming a very tight three-way battle between them, Wasps and Bath.
